What are some new, old, and current game day traditions that we expect for the opening game at Protective this weekend?

For the game itself, what will be new traditions? Will we resurrect any older traditions? Any additions to our current traditions?

1. The football team will be running out to the field with a new intro song. In the past it has been the Marching Blazers performing and forming a tunnel for them after their pre-game performance. At the new stadium, they will be running out to a song playing over the speakers, similar to Va Tech's Enter Sandman intro.
I'm hoping it has something to do with fire, iron, dragons.
Black Sabbath - Iron Man, Jimi Hendrix - Fire, Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla: any of these work for me.

2. Since the return, we haven't really done much as a stadium for kickoffs. Is it still "Goooo Blazers! Give 'Em Hell!"? This is something the cheerleaders, ribbon board, and jumbotron should help the crowd with. Since we have those ribbon boards, we should be more vocal as one at the new stadium - especially on defense.

3. I believe everyone will have chills during and after Blazer Thunder It will be LOUD and thunderous.

4. Rumblings in the Facebook groups is that they will be playing Randy Newman's "Birmingham" around the 4th QTR? I'm all about songs about the Magic City, but this doesn't really pump up fans in my opinion and most definitely won't pump up our football team. I'm all for the Marching Blazers performing it during Pre-game or in the stands, but it's sort of a lack luster song through the speakers for the crowd.

4. I really enjoyed the pyro at Legion Field. I have no idea where they are going to put it, but I hope we have pyro again - I would also be down for fireworks, but I know the stadium is much closer to the airport than Legion and not sure about those logistics.

Evan hinted about pyro coming back on Twitter, I believe. When he was talking about that second interview with Ingram that never came, someone replied a picture of the fire on the roof of the Superdome in the comments and he said something along the lines of “you don’t know how close you are” back to them

Collecting parts of Legion Field that fell off during the game. That one is over.......

We don't have to get hammered anymore to watch games and pass around a bottle at halftime. That's over.

Yes it happened.

Not feeling the Birmingham song at halftime. Maybe at the end of games when we win or something, but not really a crowd energizer.

I kinda like it. Hope it catches on. It's not to fire up the team. It's to promote Birmingham.

Take me home Country Roads, Won't Back Down and Dixieland Delight ain't exactly dance anthems, either. But fans sing 'em at stadiums.

I'll play the song Birmingham at the tailgate live to practice those who are tailgating with us. :-)

Having been at the VT @ WVU game a couple weeks ago I can attest to what this Birmingham song can be. Will it pump up the crowd? No, but it'll get them engaged. I think it'll be a really neat tradition if it catches on. Don't know how much of the song they plan on playing, but I absolutely am going to boo at the "born in Tuscaloosa" line.

I'm sorry, the whole "Blazer Thunder" clapping thing is just stupid. And a ripoff. This was on display at the Jax St. game when both sides did the exact same thing in succession. And it won't be thunderous because only about 10% of the people at games do it, and that number will be a lot less with a bunch of first timers in the stands this weekend wondering what in the hell is going on. And the whole premise of this post is odd. I mean, "new tradition" is a contradiction in terms. This is my 23rd year watching UAB football, and this conversation pops up time and again. You can't "make" a tradition. That's something that just happens organically. When you try to make a tradition, you end up with a ripoff like the Viking clapping thing, and just look silly.

Hate to tell you this but all athletic traditions are ripped off each other one way or another. You know how many teams think they invented the Tomahawk Chop? Or doing something specific on 3rd down?

Also traditions don't have to happen organically. I was in the student section when the AD introduced Auburn's free-throw clap, and it's taken off since then. Inversely, I've been a season ticket holder for basketball for 4 years and still have no damn idea what UAB's free-throw sequence is.

I like Blazer Thunder except that that it goes on way too long. The drum line plays on forever at the end and people get too tired of clapping (myself included).

This statement is demonstrably false. I'm not saying that some aren't ripped off, or even that most aren't ripped off, but they all aren't ripped off. From whom did Auburn rip off flying an eagle around the stadium? From whom did Clemson rip off Howard's Rock? From whom did FSU rip off Chief Osceola planting the flaming spear? From whom did Ohio State rip off dotting the I?

The Tom Petty sond didn't start after he died. It been done for years because Petty got his start in Gainesville.

The Viking clap is great. The players love it. And it IS pretty unique to *college* football.
