The writing is on the wall. Legal dispute over the special deal with the MWC. ESPN can hit Fox pretty hard by taking their prize inventory team. ESPN needs some late night content and Boise State can provide 6-7 of those games. They can slide easily as the 12th member and instantly would improve the football side. Boise State would get tv eyeballs with ESPN, ABC, etc.

I think this deal is going to be done. Probably with VCU also coming. The American would end up getting better with the UConn departure.

You are correct that if ESPN cares enough they can make it happen. It would probably require ESPN to pay the AAC more though to make it financially worth it for Boise to move. The question is does ESPN care that much?

Yes.

For the move to make financial sense for Boise ESPN would probably have to raise the AAC's payout where Boise would make at least 8 million a year on a FB only share. We'll see.

The only way Boise State would join the AAC is with full membership and a true western division. I don't see the boosters/sponsors/fans supporting a partial membership with oly sports in the Big West, Big Sky, or WAC. Too much at stake for a new university president to make unilateral decisions without input from all the school's stakeholders.

An all sports western division is possible but would require Houston, SMU, and Tulsa to agree to being in it. I just don't see that happening.
Because we needed another thread about the Boise situation.

Don't know what Houston would say, SMU seems to be behind the idea for football only, Pony94 might know how they feel about all sports.

Tulsa will not have much to say either way. Our AD is extremely passive and our school's administration is in chaos. We'll probably go along with whatever is decided.

I don't think it happens, just because of the headaches that come with Boise, travel, money, or the AAC having to add too many teams.
Due to travel concerns, Boise will come in with a special deal from ESPN. They will receive $3,500,000 a year more than all other AAC members.

ESPN isn't going to pay everyone an extra million, but I disagree about Boise needing $8 million. They will only make $3.5 all sports in the current mwc contract with less exposure. Add in the fact that the AAC is almost getting the ny6 invite every year and the larger cfp money too. Playing a few games on ABC vs Fox Sports 1 is a huge difference too.

I wouldn't think Boise State would even want all sports if we go to only 12.

That's what they'd make if there was an even split of the TV deal, but there isn't with their bonus and everything else their cut will be over 5 million a year. They aren't joining without a raise, and probably a pretty significant one. A FB only share of the AAC TV deal would probably be about equal to what they are going to make with the new MWC deal, so ESPN would have to sweeten that pot to make it work.
Football only or nothing. If Boise is already making demands of us then they have not changed one iota. And for Gods sake, we don't need Boise.

It depends. Would you get an outright contract bowl slot with Boise in the conference? It would probably be worth more than the access slot. I think that should be on the table.

Boise State won’t make a move if the AAC holds at 12. IMO, they only join if there is true 7 school western division with all sports. It just doesn’t make sense otherwise.

The math for a Boise stand a alone addition as a "football only" member doesnt really make sense. They make 5.8 under their current "special deal" in the MW. As a "football only" member, they only make 4.9 million in the AAC + whatever pittance they would get from a WCC/BigWest/BigSky olympic sports member.

After watching this fiasco in the west, no way the AAC would hand Boise (a school that seems to constantly be trying to renegotiate their deal) a special deal to enter the AAC. I dont think ESPN could hand them money outside of the AAC deal without opening themselves up to a pretty strong tortious interference lawsuit.

ESPN would have to add about 14 million a year to the AAC deal in order to fund a 3 team western addition that would make "all sports" western memberships more viable. That could potentially add 18 late night starts to the ESPN inventory. That stable of late night starts might actually appeal to ESPN after losing all their MW inventory to FOX/CBS a few weeks ago.

And I agree 1000% that will never happen. Its 2400 miles from Houston to Boise. A hurdle that each team can overcome once every other year (for football only). There is no way that you will get any of the western teams to agree to send their olympic sports there every year.

It would certainly elevate your non-football programs but be too much of a financial weight on every athletic department to make sense.

We say no.......... as for football we have an upcoming series with them already so that wouldn't be a problem.

If the AAC wants only 12 and Boise balks, then we move over to AFA or SDSU that would jump in a heartbeat. Then you replace the mwc loss with New Mexico State or Idaho.

Just because Boise State doesn't come that doesn't mean the mwc isn't raided.

Exactly. Somebody is going to come up on the short end of the settlement of this mess. Our future target (or targets) will come from the school or schools who lose this dispute.
Boise in the west with Tulane or Memphis in the east would be awesome.

Stay at 12. Boise Olympic will be fine in the WCC or Big West.

The MWC wouldn’t be that damaged if Air Force left. Like Boise State, SDSU won’t leave without an all sports western division either. For backfill, there are other options than just NMSU and Idaho.
