Saturday 7:00 at the Ted: UAB (9-5, 0-1 CUSA). ESPN+

Results to date: Troy (76-75); Alabama A&M (74-52); Utah Valley (55-66); Mount St Mary’s (58-51); Lamar (57-48); Kentucky (58-69); Texas (57-67); Memphis (57-65); Montevallo (75-63); N Alabama (63-56); Alabama St (71-63); Duquesne (77-68); Thomas Univ (82-49); Charlotte (44-51).

Last game: Charlotte finished the game on an 8-1 run to win a back and forth, ugly BB game. UAB’s defense held the 49ers to 37% FG, but 18 UAB TOs for 19 POT coupled with 1-15 3-pt shooting was too much for the Blazers to overcome. Tavin Lovan scored 11 pts (5-8 FG). Interesting note- Charlotte only committed 8 PFs in the game.

UAB had to resort to plan B early in the season when all-CUSA PG Zach Bryant left the team after 3 games. The Blazers are now playing a slow paced, half-court game to take advantage of their size and inside strength. They have held opponents to .387 FG (.293 3s) but are TO-prone without Bryant. Notable snipers- Benjamin 71/138 FG attempts are from 3; Brinson 21/35 FGA are 3s.
It's Game Day and I open the Virginian Pilot to check the sports page and after looking through it three times, nothing, nada, zip. Not a single word about tonight's home game against UAB. Nice articles about todays UVA/VT game (of course)... there's even articles about today's Hampton University and Norfolk State games, but not a mention of the f'n HOME TOWN TEAM's game!
I guess the take over of the Pilot by the Daily Press is complete. I guess it's time to cancel my subscription.

This! And I subscribe to the pilot on line for one reason, to keep up with ODU news! This is ridiculous.

Heaven forbid, someone might have read a story and decided to go to the game. Can't have that.
Hey we got a great article on the Hampton U track coach on the front sports page. What more could a Monarch fan ask for! Btw, what exactly does Ed Miller do all day anyway?
No school has more alumni in the 757 than ODU, what the heck.
The pilot covers Norfolk St. well...ODU not so much.
I emailed the sports editor jami.frankenberry@pilotonline to complain. We'll see what he says.

It would be a shame if everyone else did.
No way UAB plays as bad as they did down in Charlotte.

44 points, lowest score by any CUSA team on Thursday night by 20 pts
6% from behind the arc (1-15).
18 turnovers many unforced
3-7 FT 43%, only 7 FTs, shows very little aggressiveness on offense.

They can't play that bad in back to back games, but here's hoping they do.
Yep, opened the Pilot to read about the new football coaches and then started looking for info on the Basketball game, and nothing. Should we be surprised, nope.

It's a good indication of how much coverage C-USA gets nationally.

Evidently, right now he writes on Rahne staff additions. Oh, well.
The people at the Pilot should be ashamed.

Technically, only the lowest score by 7 since Charlotte had 51. But point made.

FWIW the ESPN Matchup Predictor has us at 69.8%. Odd to see for a 5-9 team vs. a 9-5 team.

Seriously. The only reason I subscribe to the Virginian Pamphlet is for Monarch news. They need to step it up.
Can’t even get the local paper to cover the team for a Saturday conference home game. Hahaha. It’s too funny at this point. Sad but funny. Let’s just make sure to blame the head coach for all of the shortcomings....
I usually defend the Pilot as a former sportswriter, but I gotta say, the lack of a game-day ODU basketball story, especially for a home game, is puzzling.

One theory I've heard floated: Since Tribune purchased the Pilot and incorporated it with the Daily Press, the DP has home-field advantage in organizational moves, even though the Pilot has the far-larger footprint and circulation. The VT, UVa. and columnist positions, arguably the three most prominent for the regional sports department, are all DP folks (and all very good writers and people, let me make that clear). Between that and the company-mandated redesign to make the Pilot conform to Tribune style cues, it really does look less like the Pilot and more like the DP with some Pilot coverage shoehorned in for the sake of synergy and continuity or something.

I think everyone's probably doing the best they can with the hand they've been dealt, one with a ton of layoff and buyout cards. But the pre-Tribune Pilot would have never let a home game day for ODU football or either basketball team go without a feature/analysis piece and a preview box. And with a hedge fund buying out Tribune's largest shareholder, I don't imagine things are getting better in the foreseeable future.
Fortunately, it seems that a substantial number of ODU fans don’t pay any attention to the VP. Good crowd (vacationing students excepted) for tonight’s game.
Officials suck last 5 mins. What the heck?
Win!
