Last year in the tourney

Game 1: Bench played 53 mins (only bc Elbert is a quasi starter and played 7 mins). They played 9 guys. Caver played 40, Green played 37, Stity played 36.

Game 2: Bench played 44 (Elbert only played 10). They played 9 guys (Kithcart only had 4 mins). Caver played 40, Stith played 38, Green played 37 mins.

Game 3: Bench played 56 mins. Elbert played 14. They played 9 guys. Caver played 40, Stith played 35, Green played 27 (foul trouble).

We play 8 now. There are teams that go through conference tourney playing 6-7 guys.

Great! So what happens if/when Caver, Stith, or Green has major foul trouble, suffers an injury that immediately eliminates him from playing, comes down with the flu or other illness?

Having adequate depth to cover those things is much like having insurance, or owning a firearm. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Elbert started. Quasi starter sounds a lot like saying someone is a little bit pregnant.

Sure there are teams that play very few (6 - 7) players. There are also many others that play more than just 6 - 7 players in a tournament.
This boils done to this commentary that is completely wrong that teams need depth and will get tired in the conference tourney. It's not true.

And obviously having good players to back up Green/Oliver ect would be nice. The chances of mid majors having great depth are somewhere between slim and none. If any team in our league has injuries or foul trouble, they are going to be hurting.

P.S. When your "starter" plays 5-10 minutes per game, your "bench" is going to play more minutes. Typically teams have starters that play more minutes but for whatever reason Jones felt the need to have Elbert in the game for the fist 2-3 mins and then maybe another stretch at some point.

100 miles away - VCU.
Playing a lot of players doesn't necessarily mean you have great depth.
I thought we were a deep team at the start of the season, think JJ even stated it was one of his deeper teams. How quickly that can change.

Now you're going to create a new definition for "depth"? Unbelievable. Obviously you are going to make your entire argument hing on your use of the word "great".

Face it, VCU is a mid-major that has solid depth as witnessed by the fact that they have backups at every position that play double figure minutes.
VCU is a very good mid major team. They don't have great depth, which was stated earlier. Majors have 4 and 5 star players come off the bench. VCU has developmental 3 star players come off the bench.

Here's where all this came from Giles (see below). Good players to back up Green/Oliver. It has nothing to do with the depth being 4 or 5 stars as you are now trying to make it.

Im sorry you don't understand. I will try to explain better in the future.

Translated, for those who aren't internet fluent: "Okay, you got me cold. But I'm too caught up in my own self-admiration that I will die before admitting it."
I don't see how that contradicted anything I said.
Let's put this into a different context:

Me: Hey, Mr. Auto Dealer, all I see on your lot are Hyundais and Kias. I thought you used to carry more selections than this.
Used Car Salesman: Having more choices would be nice, but this is Norfolk. Your chances of finding a dealer in town with more than two brands are slim and none.
Me: Little Joe's down on Military Highway has plenty of other choices.
Used Car Salesman: Little Joe's is a good operation, but you're never going to find any Mazeratis or Porches there.
Can we just close this thread?
I thought it was a good win.

Nothing to be sorry about there Giles. I understood your words just fine. I'd even add that you had far less typos than you normally do in spelling out those words. 07-coffee3

Blocking people isn't my thing. Free speech and all that. Besides, sometimes you say things that I agree with.

This.

They are better than JMU, whom we lost to.

We haven't become world beaters by any stretch, but progress is progress.
