Wondering this Wednesday:

1). O/T is Wayne State, which voted to build a 3K seat arena, for their basketball teams and a possible G-League team, thinking of moving up to D-I???? They could try to join the Horizon League and maybe move their FB to the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

2). Nothing reported on Rachwal signing on with a NFL team?

3). Today is May 1. Anyone got more recent photos of the new championship project building? Isn't the building scheduled to be completed in say 10 weeks???

The Pioneer League. I THINK, is a FB only league for teams who want to play non-scholarship FB with their other sports being D-I. Schools include Drake (CC's school), Dayton, Butler, Valpo, etc.

Pistons moving their G-League team to WSU.

I wouldn't be so sure about Wayne State moving to D-1. Remember, they'll have to also bring up their football team to at least FCS level, and their current facilities/budget are no where near FCS level.

I think they saw this as an opportunity to update their current arena and get some revenue out of it. Pistons apparently will sign a 30-year lease contract for the G League team, meaning WSU will get some $$$ for it.

The Pistons are also building their new offices next to Wayne State. They're scheduled to move there from Auburn Hills in August.
Moving the G-League team to Detroit is a great thing in my opinion. I'm a Toronto professional sports fan and both our NHL and NBA minor league teams are in the same city (basically, Raptors 905 is in Mississauga). Definitely makes call ups and send downs easier and makes it easier on the players where if they are someone who may be in both pro and minor leagues, they don't need to live in two separate places.

At least Detroit and GR aren't too far apart. Could be worse. I always think of the Vancouver Canucks who have their AHL affiliate in Utica New York, almost 3000 miles away
Dear Friends,
I don't know what kind of rental deal Wayne State may get, to me, they should have had the Piston's pay for at least half of the facility.
When the World Football League was formed, and the Detroit Wheels played their games at Rynearson, the Wheels paid for the lights that were used for three decades. I don't know what they cost at the time, but it saved Eastern paying for them.

So true Ken my friend, thank you to the Detroit Wheels even if they stole our coach in the process. My guess if that the Piston's lease will indeed pay for a whole lot of that building cost, but I cannot declare that as fact. I think this is an excellent use of taxpayer dollars. It gives WSU an upgraded facility, provides a venue for minor league basketball and is an option for high school tournaments, smaller entertainment events and graduations within the City, much like the Convocation Center does for our area. Universities need to collaborate vigorously with the surrounding community to justify their tax-exempt status and I suppose everyone can surmise that I live in Ann Arbor based on my comments.

A side note of history as well. Years ago a minor league baseball franchise was interested in locating at Oestrike Stadium and subsequently upgrading the facility. The deal breaker was that state law prohibited alcohol sales on college campuses at that time, a strike out to be sure. The "island" mentality of Universities needs to go away, yesterday.
I disagree with having the team in Detroit. Why the hell does there need to be another team in Detroit -- not to mention a minor league team.

Agree.

A 3K arena in the city will be a big success for Wayne State. Lot of usages besides the G-league team and WSU MBB/WBB. Some events which go to UDM's Calihan Hall can easily go to WSU's new arena.

G-League would do at least 25 events per year. WSU would do say a dozen or so for MBB and WBB.

Read somewhere where the Pistons are expected to pay almost 900K per year for usage of it for G-league games.

Maybe 1-AA conferences are weird. The MVC could work as well.

Yeah, but the MVC is a very tough FCS conference. It is better than some FBS conferences.

Also WSU's FB stadium only seats 6K so it is too small for anything but small time FB.

WSU should stick with D2 and the GLIAC. Their closest D2 competition is SVSU and the GLIAC is a nice league.
And isn't Wayne State is exactly a football powerhouse. Went 2-9 last season and haven't won the GLIAC since 1975, apparently.

I will mention as I may have in the past, that I have an undergraduate degree from Wayne State so I'm familiar with the school and its athletics even
though it has been decades...

I'm guessing that WSU would like to be D-I but has no appetite,, success, financial assets for D-I scholarship FB.

As I suggested, getting into the Horizon League would be a very good move for them getting 'equality' with UDM and OU in hoops and not going broke on FBS or FCS FB.

They could go non-scholarship FB like CC's Drake program OR drop football completely and be 100% Horizon.

3,000 seats would be ideal for a G-League team (D.C. has a new arena for its new G-League team and Mystics) which seats about the same.

Honestly, that would be a very smart (futuristic) decision to drop football for WSU.

I think that is a realistic possibility.

Just remember FB is usually the sport which drives conference affiliations.

IF a school doesn't have football they aren't going to be in the B1G, MAC, etc. Likewise, they can't be in the GLIAC, which is keyed on D-II football.

So if WSU wants to drop FB they'd need a new conference...

I was wrong about the MVC. They have FB (FCS) and non-FB members. Think I got it right.

As I indicated earlier, there is a non-scholarship FB league, Pioneer Football League, which doesn't give FB scholarships.

To pivot back to EMU, I think having another D-I in the Detroit Metro area would be good for MBB in S.E. MI. There is an intense rivalry between OU and UDM. No reason EMU can't be part of it.

I would like to see doubleheaders at say the O'rena. OU vs EMU and UDM vs. say CMU. EMU could and should do home and home with OU, UDM and WSU. Three of our OOC games would be bus rides to or from the Convo.

We need to do more with other HL schools like No. Ky, Wright State, etc.

GLIAC is an elite div 2 conference

Definitely. But it's a huge leap from D2 to FCS. I'm just saying you should at least be a semi-regular contender for your elite D2 conference before considering moving up to FCS.
