Interesting that all 3 recruits are HS seniors, which is great, but most of the last classes have had a lot of JCs/CCs.
On Verbal Commits, it shows a PG named Rakym Felder 5'10", has committed to KSU and he will be a sophomore next fall in terms of eligibility. He is from Fort Mill, SC originally and then went to New Mexico Junior College. Anybody else see or hear anything about Felder or any other recruit for that matter?
I saw where Giovanni Santiago, PG, from Hargrave Military Academy was just offered by KSU.

2020 is going to be a huge recruiting year for Senderoff/staff with 5 known departures.
Of the three recruits, I see 2-3 redshirts and the 2 are in the areas where we can use some help. I expect coach is looking for a 6-7", athletic wing who can rebound. We could be shooting challenged.
Our we sure Felder will ne a sophomore? he's been around a while He played at South Carolina in 2016/17 and then was in a JUCO. GFlash68, do coaches redshirt freshmen much anymore, because of how easy it is to transfer? If nothing else, they are likely to graduate before their eligibility is used up and then can go anywhere.[/b]
I thought Felder played a game or two in JC last year or something? Not sure if there's any chance he can get that year back because it was such a small number of games. I saw Santiago show up on our offer list last week too. This made me wonder if Felder is a lock or not. With Williams, Roberts, Felder, and Hernandez in the fold there wouldn't seem to be much need for a freshman PG.
I expect Simons to be a player for us. I've been wrong before on expecting older guys coming in to make a big splash from day one, but Simons is coming from a higher level and he was successful there. A lot probably depends on how much work he put in this year but I'd be surprised if he isn't a big part of our rotation next year.
Muskrat, you're right about redshirts. They're seldom used anymore due to the grad transfer rule. Honestly, it seems pretty petty to me. If you're not going to play a freshman then redshirt him. It changes nothing for the current season and it gives the player an extra year. If he's still around by then and he stays loyal to you that's great. If he leaves for greener pastures well that's too bad, but you wouldn't have him anyways if you didn't redshirt so be it. I almost wonder if a coach embraced redshirting freshmen while no one else is, would he be able to use that to gain an edge with recruits? Probably not because most recruits believe they will start from day 1 and be all American by day 2, but it's interesting to think about.
With Felder, I think his clock is at junior even though he hasn't played two full seasons....he was at SC in 2016-2017, and didn't play in 2017-2018. 2018-2019, he played a few games at JUCO. I always thought you got 5 years to play 4 seasons, which means he only has 2 years left
While Pippen is a junior eligibility wise if he plays anywhere close to what we think he should he will likely be good as gone after next year as i'd think he'll be grad transfer eligible.
So lets assume we have 6 guys in their last year at kent next year.
I would not make that assumption. I read that the NCAA is considering legislation that will make it more difficult to grad transfer. It will not eliminate it, but will make it less desirable. This has the support of the coaching community. I hope it is true.
Figured I would post this here since it probably doesn’t deserve its own thread. Both Elton Alexander and Dennis Manoloff were laid off by the Plain Dealer/Cleveland.com. That probably means little if any college basketball coverage. I assume the Plain Dealer will just print the same articles we see in the Akron Beacon Journal and Record Courier if even that.

I won't miss Alexander. Don't wish him ill, but I hated his coverage and his attitude towards Kent.
I wonder if the newspaper will go to the 'independent contractor' model, but then again, why does the PD even exist anymore? My parents have been getting it for 50 years and the PD doesn't even care to deliver it to their home anymore. It is a bad newspaper with mostly bad writers that offer little worth reading. I get more insight from the comments section on reddit than the PD offers at this point.

I can’t disagree too much (although it does beat listening to ESPN commentary) but I have noticed over the years when they publicize a game the crowd tends to be larger.

Have you ever read the 'Recap' article on the ESPN website after a game? Go to the March 8th Akron-Kent State game on ESPN. A few sentences - 'Philip Whittington led scorers', 'Antonio Williams had these stats', 'Danial Utomi had these stats' etc. Then check the bottom...

Going back to read the text, yes, it was all describing the stats and nothing about game flow, no personal reactions, no quotes, no interpretation of the meaning of what happened.

I think it will go more the route of the small local papers where they pay someone to attend the local school board meeting and pay them $50 to write 400 words on it for the monthly paper. Not something you can make a living at, but an income supplement for retirees or people particularly interested in something (like local politics). There won't be any deep digging or understanding the relationships between players/coaches/recruits, but we weren't getting that anyway. Honestly, it would be an improvement over Elton.
While the quantity and quality of sports reporting for most sports has continued to dwindle over the years, the massive coverage of certain sports has continued to explode. Ohio State football, the Cleveland Browns, etc. Hell, many Ohio papers devote an entire SECTION to that stuff, while you're lucky to even get a Kent State score.
It's worth remembering:
1) Cleveland is not a good sports town. It's a great football town. That's it. After that, there is room for one of the Cavs and Indians. You only have to look at the questionable lineup and bullpen of the Indians (where they won't spend money to fill holes) to realize that they are blowing the best starting rotation in baseball.
2) Cleveland has a massive inferiority complex so they aren't allowed to like sports clubs from the local colleges because they are mid-majors. It has to be all (pros or Ohio State, which is professional) or nothing. Other cities don't have this problem (they are allowed to like their mid-major basketball programs), this is a unique Cleveland problem.
I’ve been in Phoenix the last 10 days. The newspaper is terrible (they actually insert 2 USA Today sections and charge $2.70 for the weekday paper) so I only read it one day. However the radio sports talk coverage is almost all football. The Cardinals have the first pick in the draft and it sounds just like the Cleveland coverage did the past 10 years. Only the names are different. There is a little baseball talk (mostly negative) and NBA and NHL talk is almost non existent. The only Arizona St. talk is where is Bobby Hurley thinking of going. I think all media is now coming from a national perspective (they just dress it up a little differently in each city). There’s a reason why all 18 Yankee-Red Sox games are on ESPN or some other national network.

Kent State lands point guard Santiago
From the clips on him seems like he plays fast and is a slick passer. Looks like a left handed shooter and most of his one hand passes in his highlights are left handed. That can be an advantage because everything is backwards from what defenders are used to.
Interesting that the article says we still have one scholarship available. I assume that means someone else is leaving or someone isn't coming. That or maybe the author confused Givens as being on scholarship.

Duling and Harris opened 2 scholarships ...
Small PGs need to have a separation skill ... wonder what Santiago's is? Maybe he's a tenacious defender, which would certainly help.
