But if they build a new stadium PBS will be sitting there empty regardless. Are you arguing that the Bengals are just going to re-up after the lease expires? I don't see that. I'm not arguing for kicking them out; I'm just arguing for not wasting big money with a significant renovation or building the next stadium. If they want to dip into their own pockets more power to them.

Again--you are projecting. In 2026, Mike Brown may well be dead and the franchise will be under different ownership. If the county was smart and the new owners were amenable, the clever move would be to bargain for the season ticketholders to have controlling interest in the franchise and thus be owned by the fans of the team (ala Green Bay). That way, management decisions and maintenance would become a matter of community pride, and support for the franchise would skyrocket. New ownership might well consider such a proposal as long as they got a significant cut of the profits for the rest of their lives.

This is forward-thinking instead of the black and white version of FB in the Queen City that many on this board have--it isn't the Bengals OR UC FB....it's both...and both can command the dollar if the franchises are successful....which means....WINNING.

You want proof? Look no further than Cleveland. Attendance at Indians games and fan interest did not decline while LeBron was a Cavalier during his second stint. You can do both.

If I recall correctly, the NFL has done away with city owned team. They're not allowed outside of Green Bay.

Violates the Sherman anti-trust act. A proposal for a Green Bay type model is outlined here:

Imagine this Cincinnati City Council controlling an NFL franchise? Too many punchlines here to enumerate.
Rimshot

Wouldn't be city council...it would be the season ticket holders by vote.
Let the sale begin. I'm ready to turn the page [yet again] on the season.

Quote:MLB trade rumors: Yasiel Puig? Tanner Roark? Imagining a Philadelphia Phillies, Reds deadline blockbuster

Reds reality: Cincinnati enters play on July 26 with a 46-54 record. With an eight-game deficit in the NL Central and NL Wild Card races, it’s far-fetched to believe this team can leapfrog the majority of the National League to make it to October. Despite a plus-35 run differential (sixth-best in the NL), the Reds own just a 3.2 percent chance to make the playoffs, per Fangraphs.

What a deal could look like: Think back to what the Phillies did last year when acquiring veteran shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for a player on the backend (at the time) of their top 10 prospects. It didn’t cost a ton (and also wasn’t worth a ton), but made sense in the moment. Something like Roark and Dietrich for prospects JoJo Romero and Kevin Gowdy could make sense. If Puig was subbed in for Dietrich, perhaps the Phillies could justify Enyel De Lo Santos as the lead prospect in the deal—giving the Reds two of Philadelphia’s top 10 prospects for a pair of rentals.

Yep. The Fat Lady Is Cued Up.

looks like Puig could garner interest from a few different clubs.. if we could snag a couple other team's top 10 prospects for Roark, Puig, Iglesias, etc. I'd feel a lot better about the prospects we gave up last off season.
tucker playing some hero ball
ha. the reds plated nine individual (and ten total) los rojoses in the second inning. looked like a ten run lead could have been threatened. peralta ruins a quality start for sonny boy. is this van meter feller fo realz?
Doc just wrote a pretty nice piece on VanMeter here. Tucker's praise of VanMeter's hitting knowledge is especially interesting considering he's had Joey Votto as a teammate for his whole MLB career.

It's also interesting to compare VanMeter with Senzel. They're practically the exact same age (Josh is about 100 days older.) Last year in AAA, Senzel hit .310/.378/.509 in 193 PAs before he was injured. Van Meter hit .260/.337/.454 in 483 PAs in AA/AAA. Advantage Senzel. This year they both start the season in AAA. Senzel goes ,257/.316/.371 in only 38 PAs while JVM goes .348/.429/.669 in 211 PAs. Advantage JVM although it's such a small sample size for Senzel and considering AAA hitting stats are way up across the board this year, I'm not sure it says much. For the Reds, Senzel has gone .278/.342/.463 in 283 PAs for a 105 OPS+ while JVM is at .319/.420/.519 in 81 PAs for a 148 OPS+. Here we need to be very conscious of JVM's small sample size but you can't argue with that production.

Is JVM for real? Who knows? Realistically it's extremely unlikely he can keep up anything near this level of productivity as pitchers adjust to him this year. But I think we have to find him a bunch of playing time somewhere (and AAA isn't going to do him any good) to continue to find out exactly how "real" he is. BTW, I'm not a big WAR fan, but it's a cumulative stat and by B/R's calculation Senzel has been worth .6 games this year while JVM has actually been worth .8 in less than 1/3rd the plate appearances as noted above.

Addendum: Baseball is a funny game. Most of us probably remember that Senzel was the #2 overall pick by the Reds a few years ago. He's considered a great pick around baseball even considering he went #2. But I'll bet almost none of you know how the Reds got VanMeter (without looking it up). JVM was a 5th round pick in the 2013 draft by the Padres. The Reds traded for him in Dec. 2016. What did he cost us? Anyone remember a C named Luis Torrens? Me neither. Reds picked him from the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft and immediately flipped him to the Pads for a player to be named later who turned out to be named Josh VanMeter the very next day.
David Bell has to go, right?

Pirates and Clint Hurdle continue to be a joke. How the MLB has done nothing to stop their headhunting is ridiculous.

It’s not a coincidence that pretty much every team in the division has had this problem with them.
Great bench brawl tonight. Chicken Hurdle would not man up to Bell who would have whopped his arse.

Don't forget about Wood and Mahle. I don't think the Reds are done trading - they have til 4pm. My guess is Roark gets dealt. Possibly Raisel Iglesias as well if they get a deal they like though he's obviously no longer a starter. So I think the rotation might look like:

Castillo
Gray
Bauer
Disco
Wood

for the rest of the year with Mahle moving to the bullpen and available to start if (or more likely when) one of the above gets hurt. Then they can play it by ear with Wood. If they like what they see and he seems healthy, maybe look into a LTC or at least give him a qualifying offer. If he takes it, he's probably not a bad deal at around $18M iirc. If not, at least we'll get a compensation pick for him if he signs somewhere else. Plus we can use that money to look into extending Castillo or Disco or Bauer (although he says he'll only sign 1 year deals for the rest of his career.)
Obviously the reds didn’t think Puig was affordable. If the choice is Puig for August and September, or Bauer for August and September and 2020 then it’s a no-brainer.
and trammell
Yasil, we hardly knew ye.
Tanner Roark to the A's for their #8 prospect Jameson Hannah. nice to restock the cupbord a bit. 21 year old CF wsa taken in the second round of last year's draft.

From MLB.com

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 45 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

A three-year starter at Dallas Baptist, Hannah improved each year in college and as he turned in a huge junior season, his name was popping up in 2018 first-round conversations. The A's were very happy he lasted until the second round, the earliest the Patriots have had a hitter selected, and signed him for an above-pick value bonus of $1.8 million. He was able to show off some of his tools in the short-season New York-Penn League during his pro debut, but a foot injury shelved him for the summer in mid-July.

While he isn't the tallest guy in the world, he's strong and athletic and has a strong track record of consistent hard contact from the left side of the plate. He has an advanced approach, managing the strike zone well and finding the barrel while being very quick to the ball. His bat speed and strength point to some over-the-fence pop and plenty of extra-base power. He's shown he can handle wood just fine, both in a scorching hot stretch to end his Cape Cod season in 2017 and during his brief pro debut.

A plus runner, Hannah is an efficient baserunner with the potential to steal bases and cover a ton of ground in center field. He's a capable defender, albeit one with a fringy arm. He could start to move quickly given his all-around skillset, with a potential future as a No. 2 type hitter in a big league lineup awaiting.
I guess I'm just a softy, but I'm a bit sad today to see these guys go. Scooter is a local who not only did everything we asked but overperformed while doing it. Puig came with some baggage but in a half-season showed he can still play and I'd take him on my team any day. His arm is big, his heart and hustle may be bigger. Roark in his short time kind of reminded me of Tom Browning - a bulldog who will give you all he's got and do whatever he can to win. Good luck guys, maybe one or more of you will be back as a free agent.

Trammel seems to have lost some of his luster this year. His numbers aren't impressive, but he is still getting walks and he's playing in a pitcher's league. In hindsight, maybe we should have included him last offseason and gotten Realmuto but he's having a bit of a down year too so who knows how the dominoes would have fallen from there. Hannah currently isn't as highly rated or developed, but he might turn out to be as good or better than TT. One advantage he has is that he projects as a CF while that was becoming less and less likely for TT.

The good news is it opens up playing time for some guys who deserve their shot to show if they can get it done. Ervin and VanMeter are 2. Maybe they also call up Aquino. I'm still a Peraza fan and I'm glad we didn't give up on him totally after his slow start. Farmer shows promise as a super-utility guy who can also C. Maybe Dietrich can recapture some of his early season magic with more playing time.
I'm still processing all of the trades. Not sure what to think at this point. Damn, I loved Scooter. Our core starting rotation could be nasty even into next year.
Hate seeing Gennett go...but I'm wondering if he's broken...had a tough time coming back from rehab.

"A player to be named later"....wonder if that's going to be middle relief? I don't mind letting the others walk. Now...if they could talk Votto into relenting some of his $$$ on the last years of his contract, they might be able to sign some solid prospects.
