Well I guess it's not off-topic (hopefully) when the Red Sox play.
Call me old-fashioned but I can't stand the new concept of 'bullpenning' (pitching a key game in the playoffs by bullpen committee, even though you have a completely rested starting pitching staff). The A's did it last night against the Yankees (it failed), and now the Brewers are doing it in game 1 of the NLDS today.
Christian Woodruff pitched 3 hitless innings for Milwaukee (48 pitches) but he was replaced in the 4th inning because it's a 'bullpenning' game. I just don't understand how this strategy sets up you to compete in a 5-game divisional series (or 7 game series for that matter).
I mean, I understand doing it when you have no other options but not today.....

The A's have lost, what, 10 starters this year to injury? I'd say they had no other options.
And the Brewers have held the Rockies to 1 hit through 6 so I'd say the method was pretty effective. Brewers have an ok starting staff but their bullpen is lights out.

I think Holt is our only Rice guy in the playoffs and he has not yet been in the lineup.

Its not really new. Billy Beane was championing this 15 years ago. He actually wanted it de rigeuer for the team, and said that the only thing preventing it was entrenched norms and contract structures (i.e. way too many items like SO nos., innings pitched, games won, games started bonuses going away) stood in the way.
When I read that so many years ago, I remember the article pointed as well to a study on arm recovery time, and that it was not linear. Thus the 'arm health' of your staff over time was dramatically increased. Additionally, it did not allow opponents the ability to see a pitcher three times in game and get a bead on him. If you went with a 3 inning cap, odds are that any one pitcher wouldnt be seen twice by the majority of the opponent team in that game.
Frankly, I wonder why some 'saber guru' team hasnt done this by now.
If you think about it, the cost savings could be enormous for the first couple of teams that go down this path.

Unless you believe the coach is intentionally throwing the game, if a group of people can achieve what a single starter can and you have the results to show it.. whats the issue?

Holt with an amazing defensive gem to pretty much kill the Yankees rally. And then he leads off the next inning with a single. I think he's starting game 4 too, regardless if the Yanks throw a lefty or not.

Of course, Boston has long loved their "working class" players, and Brock is the epitome of that, and a great teammate to boot.
