I would hope the entire team would be outfitted with the best (meaning safest) helmet available. Full retail on the VICIS helmet is listed at $1500, but I’m sure the price drops if a program makes a purchase that covers an entire team of 100+ helmets. Still, it’s likely a six-figure investment. Until other programs made a similar investment it might be a recruiting edge as I would want my son using this helmet.

Rough count of 106 players on roster. If it was just 1 helmet per player, would be about 150k. But how many helmets per player, at least with the non redshirts. 3? 4? (white, black, purple, gold). If it was 300-400 helmets, sounds like that could awfully expensive...
Money well spent. I've gotta think they're getting a deal with VICIS if they are using more than one helmet per player. It's a fantastic investment and good marketing for VICIS.
Sure it's incredibly expensive, but it shows they truly care for player safety. What player wouldn't want to go to a school that puts their money where their mouth is? Indirectly, it's one hell of a recruiting tool. We care about your safety and are willing to spend the best money can buy to keep you safe.

We’re ready for season 48 at JMU and to celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football‼️

#GoDukes

Wow 2021 marks 50 years of JMU Football. What an accomplishment.
By what % have these helmets decreased concussions over the previous helmets? How much do the previous helmets cost?

Good questions, as for the first one, sort of an educated guess and not an absolute answer I would think.

Found this where in 21 high school programs there was a pretty significant drop in concussions the year they switched to a good chunk of players wearing that helmet.

Of course that's only a sample size of one year of the new helmet, but a decent amount of teams involved. I personally have always thought one of the biggest factors is making players wear helmets that fit though. You see helmets fall off so easily all the time, any helmet that fits is hardly ever coming off unless that's one part of helmets that's changed a lot since I last played wearing a helmet, which I really doubt.

Edited: Corrected the percentage, I originally skimmed through too quick.
Course I’ve heard a # of people claim you want to get rid of players tackling with their heads & using helmets as weapons, then get rid of helmets like rugby, or at least get rid of face masks. Does make some sense, although it will never happen.
There’s a lot of logic to that, but I think it’s hard for the NFL to even consider how that would “look”. People out there would be screeching about the NFL making players “less safe” even though it would be the opposite.
Yeah I think the idea of getting rid of face masks makes a lot of sense and would lead to a lot less of the really brutal helmet to helmet hits, but I think anything like that is still just a band aid and that any actual solution is gonna mean major changes to the sport. Changes that would definitely be extremely unpopular when they’re first made, but I think football would survive just fine.

Concussions are a big issue of course, but a lot of the harmless looking contact in sports like football and hockey are believed to contribute to CTE as well. The only way to go on without major changes would be to just go with an approach where you’re acknowledging the risks and athletes only participate at their own risk and come on, that would only last so long. “You can choose to make millions every year or just be an average joe but making millions for our entertainment might mean you blow your brains out in 20 years” isn’t a choice we should actually ask people to make.

The rules I really hate though are the “intent doesn’t matter” approach. Football and hockey are still sports where making a big, clean hit is a good thing so I think it’s ridiculous to blame a guy for making head contact when the guy he’s hitting ducks down at the last instant and things like that. Especially since it can lead to guys like Brayden Schenn, for example, who constantly turns to kiss the boards when he sees a big hit coming so he can draw a penalty.

Removing facemasks might help with making guys less likely to lead with their head, but that would leave the face open to all kinds of damage from knees, elbows, other player's helmets, cleats, shoulder pads, etc when in any sort of gang tackle, pile up, or tackling around the legs.

I don't know what the answer is, they might just have to train and penalize it out of the sport, starting from pee wee all the way up. They've made at least some progress on protecting a player's knees, still a long way to go on both.
Great combo, but I'm a little confused about the helmet. The small pic on the side shows "JMU", but the helmet Ron'Dell is wearing has the Duke Dog head. Which one is it?
I like both, but my preference is the chrome "JMU" logo... really nice.

Yeah I think that was an oversight by the photo editor. I would say what is in the squares on the right is what will be worn.

Makes sense to me.
Yeah in the past I'm pretty sure there have been other times where they don't have a pic of a player in the exact combo, the squares in the right are always exactly what it is.
looks like it's purple shorts and my white JMU football shirt for me tomorrow.
My favorite away jersey/pants combo.
