Yes, if the success continues and there is P5 interest down the road, a buyout is not much more than a speed bump on the trip out of town.

This is still a smart move by JMU to give the appearance of stability. Should help with recruiting in the next few years at least. Another head coaching change could have set them back.
True. If he leaves for say, VT, no one can blame their AD. The school has done everything it can. CUSA is gonna come a callin, I bet.

I don't know. Houston has said that JMU is the best job outside of the P5. He's probably not wrong, given the fan/institutional support, limited media pressure, decent city/state to raise children, opportunity to win something beyond a crappy bowl game.

I could be wrong, but I honestly believe that he doesn't see the G-5 as an upgrade.

You believe him. Bless your heart.
Hey, JL turned down major programs to stay at W&M.

Publicly I'm sure that he says that he has no regrets. I wonder if his inner voice says the same thing.

He makes, in James City County terms, a ton of money. He's a millionaire earned from coaching at his alma mater in a very favorable place to live. He has the inherent amount of stress associated with being a head coach but he's never had to worry about job security. He's surrounded by great golf courses. The players he coaches are great students. His assistants are hungry, underpaid, and grinding for a bigger gig.

JL is fine.

JL has also never been fired. That's a crappy part of being a head coach and almost everyone has it happen. Agree with everything in Tribal's post. I always think about how cool it must be to coach the sport you played at your alma mater and be a local legend. Stress free living isn't a bad thing. Plus he gets to hire all of his assistants and gets to work with who he wants.

Not to mention doing the job you love while working in a building with your name on it would be kind of cool.
Being able to sleep at night, not up all night worrying about your job, is worth more than a million dollars. That's what JL got along with a beautiful place to live his life on a comfortable income. Not bad.
Jimmye also has also had a great deal with Nike for years with top NFL players at his June football camp at no cost that has made it one of the outstanding and lucrative camps of its kind.

I have know Jimmye for decades and there is no doubt in my mind that he loves the life he's had, and continues to have, at W&M and Williamsburg.
No question in Harrisonburg...the rout is on!
I am at the game. JMU way too fast and athletic.

Jealous. They are off to Frisco again. We have
a lot of work to do to get to that level
They have amazing depth for an FCS team. At one point in the game the announcer noted that three of JMU's first-team offensive linemen were injured and out for the game and during their season ten first team players had missed one or more games, yet there was no dropoff.

They have a bevy of big, fast receivers and a quarterback who can get them the ball.

I believe the last CAA loss their qb suffered was that wild 44-41 win we had over JMU at Zable two years ago. That was the game where we blocked three extra points and drove 60 yards in the final four minutes for the winning TD.

Wow, have we come down since then.
JMU defense all over the SDSU offense, forcing turnovers.

Atmosphere great, fans are active and engaged. Guys talking about travel plans etc... for Frisco.

Good for them, made a great hire in Houston. I never liked Matthews, Houston a different animal.
We played JMU closer. How's that for a consolation prize?

Good point. I thought of that while watching. I am impressed with their receivers. They are difference makers.

Great game and comeback. I do not recall three blocked PAT's.

I just looked it up, and you're right. That was the last CAA game they lost and it was Schor's first career start. That comeback prevented him from going undefeated in CAA play.
"....The second-year James Madison football coach’s 10-year extension will pay him $515,311 per year.

That total includes a base salary of $390,311 — a $15,311 increase from the first extension he signed after leading the Dukes to the national title last year — and an additional $125,000 per year of privately funded pay, raised by “anonymous donors” through the school’s foundation....

....Houston will also receive a $50,000 retention bonus on Feb. 1. All of his bonuses and incentives stay the same from the initial extension he inked after last season. This year he’s already notched incentives for winning the Colonial Athletic Association ($5,000), earning a playoff berth ($31,250), winning three playoff games ($15,625 per win) and making a national championship game appearance ($31,250). A victory on Jan. 6 will net him an additional $31,250....

...If he’s to leave JMU before Jan. 2020, he’ll have to pay the school $500,000 for a job in Conference USA, the Mountain West, the Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt, or $750,000 for one in the American Athletic Conference and then $1,000,000 to move all the way up the Power Five.

The buyout numbers lessen the longer he stays at JMU.....

....The contract states the school will build a temporary indoor practice facility in time for the start of the 2018 season...."
https://jamesmadison.rivals.com/news/hou...-big-raise

(Someone on the JMU board added this up). So in if JMU wins an NC after this year:
Base salary: $390k
Anon Donors: $125k
Win CAA: $5k
Playoff Bonuses: $140,625

Total for winning the CAA and a NC: $660,625
+ ancillary bonuses/perks (country club, car, etc) which could probably take him close to $700k in total comp if he wins a NC.

And he's apparently having a custom house built in Harrisonburg. People don't have those built (they take a lot to plan & longer to build) if they're thinking of leaving in the couple of years..
$2mil per (i.e. SMU's coach) and he'll leave the partially built home where it stands.
