Is the wait finally over for UCSD? Seems that way. What a long and winding road this has been for program. And another potential WAC expansion candidate comes off board at same time, though don’t think that was realistic anyway
WAC fans will be majorly disappointed. UCSD must have gotten into the good graces of the Cal State schools.

If UCDavis, possibly the most valuable FCS school to an existing G5 conference, gets an FBS offer, the Big West would need another member. UCDavis hired Dan Hawkins last year and the results were very noticeable.

Hawaii would know if there is UCDavis talk within the MWC, and would warn the conference to make a move so the Big West is prepared.
So is Bakersfield or Sacramento coming on the CSU side?

This could be the end of the WAC if it’s Bakersfield.
It makes sense for them to go to 11 with Bakersfield so that they can have 20 conference games. With Hawaii in the conference, I believe if any of the Big West schools play in a preseason tournament, they get to play 32 games which still allow them to play 12 OOC games.

I've heard nothing to indicate that anyone else is being added or that UC Davis is leaving. I think this is just about rounding out the conference membership at 10 with a school that fits the Big West institutionally, has been a strong performer at the D-2 level, and gives the conference a presence in another major market.
Sac St would provide a travel partner and it's supposed to open a real gym now, not just a Jr High one.

The Mountain West will not realign before the next CFP contract.

I could see UC Davis going to the Big Sky to get them back to twelve members, especially since the big dogs (Montana and Montana State) value California recruiting, but I’m not sure how it would work for them financially.

I don't see any of the California schools joining the Big Sky. They like their travel budgets as they are. Its still a lot closer to the LA area for UCD and Cal Poly than the scattered Big Sky locations. Hawaii is just 1 of 10.

The Big West began today ranked 14th in conference RPI. More ooc opportunities are needed, not fewer.

Besides, the commissioner has said in recent years that if it went to 11, it would likely go to 12. So further expansion would have to follow with one more member outside California.

If it's Sacramento, maybe you see Big West football return at the FCS level with the three CA schools and - Portland State? NAU? Eastern Washington? At least one of those would have to join as full members.
Is Cal Poly a CSU school? Aren't they their own system?

All the Cal Poly locations are part of the CSU System.

The only way I could see this working is Northern Arizona and Southern Utah headed to the WAC, and then Sacramento State and Portland State joining the Big West. Even then it’s a bit goofy with Portland State being a huge outlier in the Big West.

It would make more sense for the Big West to admit CSU Sacramento, UC San Diego, and Azusa Pacific if it wanted to sponsor FCS football. NAU and SUU would then be the affiliates from the WAC.

PSU won't be able to pay the subsidies the Big West had for non-Cali schools.

Which is why Sac State is not likely joining.

there's no way Sac State leaves the Big Sky unless they either drop football, can remain a fb-only member, or get assurances from the Big West it will sponsor football itself. Option #3 seemed the most likely and even then, would require one more member from outside CA.

Agreed. Anything's possible, but there doesn't seem to be a good reason for Sacramento to leave the Big Sky so long as they're going to keep football. Affiliates can get dropped, best to stay a full member and not worry about it.
No it's just UCSD. And good for them.

WAC has to focus on APU, pure and simple.
There was a story several years ago that UCDavis received a major gift for expanding their stadium. Last year, this opinion piece came out too. Have little doubt that UC Davis has an FBS goal, and why wait 15 more years?

This is fantastic. I'm happy for UCSD.
As a UCSD alum, this is great news. UCSD is one of the top academic schools in the nation but has very little school spirit or identity. Going to D1 will help with this aspect.
