Now that Nebraska’s season is over let’s take a closer look at Carey’s Big Ten wins that people love to mention oh so much.

Rod Carey’s Big Ten wins:

Iowa (8-5)
Finished 2nd in Big Ten Legends division

Northwestern (5-7)
Finished 6th out of 7th in the Big Ten West

Nebraska (4-8)
Lowest win total since 1961

Purdue (1-11)
Arguably the worst season in school history.
Only win was a 6 point win at home against a 1-11 FCS team

18-31 (.368 win percentage)

The Iowa win was fantastic. The rest are crap. This is like a fanbase bragging about having 4 wins against the SEC and then finding out they’re bragging about beating Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Missouri. Carey’s Big Ten record is a cute little stat until you actually take the opponents into context.
I also want to mention (as I have before), that Carey should be judged first and foremost on how many conference titles he wins. 1 conference title in 5 seasons is a major disappointment. If you took a poll of this place 5 years ago and ask “How many would conference titles will NIU win in the next 5 years?” 90%+ would have said over 1.

5- too unrealistic
4- would have been phenomenal
3- would have been great
2- would have been acceptable
1- disappointing
0- unacceptable

And don’t get me started on the bowl record. 05-stirthepot
Don't forget his 9-20 record vs. teams with winning records.

It's all good though, he's inflated his record with so many wins over bad teams that it's all acceptable because there is an excuse for everything (injuries, we are a MAC school, we can't expect to win 10 games, we played a freshman QB, previous head coaches were bad, etc. etc.).

Sounds a bit like NIU's basketball program.
4-1
What is his record versus teams he was favored to win?
Is it worse to lose when you are the favorite or the underdog?
Being blown out only seems to happen in bowl games which proves we are only mediocre.
Not to mention the history of NIU football vs the big ten. All the bad losses to bad teams. At least NIU has become competitive in these games and even pick up some wins. Carey is flawed but have to keep this in persective.
This is getting a little ridiculous... I will take a win Nebraska, Iowa, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, insert any P5 all day, every day over whatever the MAC is serving up. NIU got more press from beating a four win Nebraska team than other team they beat this season and it wasn't even close. It is amazing to see people knocking NIU for only beating "crappy" power programs. These are great wins for the program.

They are great wins for the program, and your point is taken that it is good for the University when the Huskies beat a big ten or P5 team because of the increased publicity.

However, you are missing what Pride gets at in that all of these teams (with the exception of one) were very bad to mediocre teams. Carey backers have long hung their hats on these Big Ten victories, typically while defending his ineptitude in bowl games.

There is a difference between an important victory for the program and an impressive victory for the program. A common criticism, and a fair one, is that Carey has had very limited success against quality opponents. You can't call these, bar one, quality opponents simply because they reside in a powerful conference.

P5 teams have better athletes, players, facilities, fanbases, more money, etc. anytime you beat one, besides Kansas, it should be celebrated.
And for the Iowa win they were going against a QB making his first start.

Considering those were all road games except Maryland, that is not a bad showing. Plus the fact that the program gets nice big fat checks for playing those games. Nebraska must be 03-puke right now, on the hook for 3 more home games with NIU, writing large checks to the Huskies for playing them and very likely loosing at least 1 if not 2 more.

Hope the AD is firing up the phone line to Minny, now is the time to schedule the Gophers and Fleck might oblige given his ties to NIU. Road games vs Big 10 teams within a close drive would also lessen the sting of 3 Weekend home game seasons as Huskie fans could drive to Mad Town, Iowa City, West Lafayette, Bloomington, Lincoln and the Twin Cities.
All of these games were played in THEIR stadiums, hence they are more impressive away-victories. I get mad anytime anyone tries to decipher our record against the Pig10 or the P5. Until we go 50 years in a row playing 1-&-1's with them, the stats will be inherently slanted and deceiving.

Coach Carey played at Indiana. After all of this time, how has he not parlayed that into a 2-and1 at the very least. We delivered him out of coaching obscurity, he should push his relationship with Indiana to the hilt to get something accomplished scheduling wise for us.

That's shocking.

Here's the way I calculated. (If I'm off by a # two, it's late, I'm tired)

He's 44-23 overall, so according to the above 9-20 vs. winning records, that's 35-3 vs. teams with losing records.

32-8 in MAC
11-13 NC
1-2 MACC.

NC (bowls incl)

4-12 vs. teams w/ winning records
7-1 vs. FBS losing record
2-11 vs. FBS winning records
2-1 vs. FCS winning records

MAC.....

4-7 vs. teams with winning records
28-1 vs. teams with losing records

1-2 MACC.

Summary:

He beats bad teams...and how!
The MAC sucks. Less than 30% of the regular season games in his tenure have been played vs. winning teams.
He’s 0-23 when his opponent scores more points than us.
Is this based on the teams record at the end of the year or at the time we played them?
When NIU beat Alabama they were ranked but ended the year under .500
I would count that as a win over a team with a winning record for Novak because key players could get hurt after you play them.
In 2003 we lost Nick Duffy before playing BG and Toledo.
If we had him I believe we don't lose those games.
