Had some technical issues...sorry!
I kinda wish we would play JMU just to shut them up.

It was like when we were dominating FCS schools and talking **** about FBS ones.
Boils down to a philosophical question: where in the FBS would the top FCS school rank? 50th? 100th?

Where does ODU rank? 70th? 100th?
UVA is definitely a lot better than JMU. They actually might be a decent ACC team this year. Its absurd to JMU ahead of them. As for us, I think over the course of a CUSA season we are better, but at this moment I am not sure we beat them. Its a bad matchup. Their offense is really good, so is our defense, but they would be able to score some. I am not sure we can score 30 points against anybody right now, and I think we would need to. I guess we will see next week if we can score against teams that aren't in the ACC.

I agree with your assessment. Right now on a neutral field JMU beats us. By the end of the year we'll see how we stack up.
I wish that VPI rolled with that name as their main branding instead of VT.

I would put Richmond at 7, Liberty at 6, W&M at 5.
Swap UVA and JMU.

I can't really say ODU is better than JMU until the O gets figured out.
No one on this board dislikes JMU anymore than I do.

However, I have watched them play.
They are balanced on both sides of the ball, with no apparent weaknesses. IMHO every bit as good as the recent NDSU FCS championship teams, if not better because of a more balanced offense.

Transitive issues aside, Madison played common opponent UD very similarly to the way VT did (even with weather issues), with a similar outcome. The Duke's also played the other common opponent , ECU, similarly, at least the defense did, as well. The score was more lopsided in favor of VT, but both teams rolled up over 600 yards in total offense.
I think the "who is better; JMU vs UVA right now" discussion could go either way with merits on both sides.
JMU has likely peaked and will, at best, plateau for the rest of the season. UVA will get better.

ODU will also get better, and at the end of the season we can revisit this discussion.
However, right now, IMHO, it would be very unlikely for us to beat them. Indeed we would be lucky to score more than 14 on the Dukes.

Yup. Until we can matriculate the ball down the field and score, I'm not sure how we'd be better than anyone. Hoping we will see something this week against the Kiffins. We're overdue in that area as far as I'm concerned.
JMU has a really tough schedule this year. Let's see how the fair against the likes of Rhode Island and the rest of their schedule before we crown them #2.

That doesn't make the rank from the OP any less accurate.
I think we can all agree that things will change.

I expect UVA to get better, maybe dramatically so, as the season progresses.
As steve Williams settles in, I expect ODU to to get better as well.

With fewer schollies and associated depth, JMU will likely not get much better, if at all, as the season progresses. Indeed the Dukes may have already peaked.
There is a good possibility that by the end of the season, JMU moves to number 4.

However right now, there is a strong argument for them to be number 2.

Its difficult to tell. We saw it when we were dropping 60 on fcs teams. JMU, last year was toughhhhhhh. This year, I do not think they are as dangerous.

I would expect us to beat JMU. Our Dal would habe a pretty decided advantage. We wont know though.
Why is this even a discussion
I had a LOT more confidence in our ability to beat JMU last year vs this year. Sure they were tough but with Washington and Pascal in those critical roles, we would have outlasted them in a battle IMO.

That said, I'm not sure we'd score enough right now. I hope this offense can find something soon.

There is not a strong argument for No 2. UVA is better than them. Did you see what they did to Boise?
So we are discussing whether or not we would beat JMU? Maybe I need to change my opinions. Maybe this football program is not what I thought it was. We can't even be sure that we would beat an FCS program. YIKES.

To be fair, I am not sure half of CUSA and The Sunbelt could beat them in a one game scenario. I still think we are a bowl team. It is more of a commentary on how good they are and how good CUSA really is. Does it really seem crazy that a dominant FCS team is competitive with a middle to bottom CUSA team.

Then there is the matchup problem. We have not demonstrated that we can score against FCS defenses YET and I think JMU has the type of offense that would not be shut down by anybody short of the Alabamas and Clemsons.

As I said before, I think over the course of a full CUSA season, our size and depth would fair better than they would. But in a one game matchup at this point in the season, I think they would probably beat us.

Then I am extremely upset with the direction of this program. Once you make the move to FBS, you should always know that you will be favored vs FCS in the minds of your own fans. I am not sure how anyone could argue against that point.

exactly...this should even be a question or discussion. I have said it 1000 times and it still applies. This staff has not done what they need to have done from a recruiting perspective. Based on everything as of today...we are #5 in the state and that is not good. We are behind Liberty and JMU. something had better change or the $ flowing into the program and attendance will start to decline. The FAU game is HUGE and a MUST win.
