I agree. Its not like running it would have given us a substantially better chance of converting the first down, and given the difficulty we had moving the ball, why not take a chance at getting a big play when they were selling out to stop the run.

(It also could have been changed at the line by Williams) There were 9 guys in the box, NO safety help and a 1 on 1 match up with our 6-3 WR. Now execution you could argue with...but at some point somebody just has to make a play. Other than Williams, no one did all day (on offense).

This is what happens when you criticize based on the result of the play. Do the plays called give us the best chance of doing what our objective is? Are we better running inside zone on 3-1 vs. a bear front with 9 guys in the box or giving an outside WR a chance to win a 1v1 matchup?

That's one way to look at it and I wouldn't argue except the stats don't support that conclusion. We did not complete but one pass in the entire 2nd half and that was NOT a bomb. We were starting to see some success on the ground with Simmons and Sinclair.

In the second half we had 5 drives. No complete passes until the one to Little (a first down pass btw) on the final drive. We DID get enough yards per carry that had we continued to run we might have gotten some 1st downs. IMHO, we should have at least tried on the 3rd and 1.

2nd half drives:
1.) 1 rush for 4 yards 0 passing yards
2.) 3 rushes for 11 yards 0 passing yards
3.) 2 rushes for 7 yards 0 passing yards
*4.) 2 rushes for 9 yards 0 passing (3rd and one bomb)
5.) 1 rush for 1 yard 14 passing

It was 3rd and 1 with the score 38-0. They could have drawn one up in the sand and that would have been fine by me. I just love watching Williams work. Hope we get to see more of him next game.
Some of those rushes were on 2nd or 3rd down and long, which is a completely different animal.

X team did better than Y team so we must be worse the X, etc.

Not all P5 teams are the same.

Not all teams match up vs. others the same.

Not every Saturday is the same; some times you struggle, bad matchups, turnovers, look ahead (or behind) whatever.

Howard went to UNLV and beat them and then lost to Richmond by 47 points. Is Richmond 50 points better than UNLV? UNLV beat Idaho and then were fairly respectable against Ohio State......would Howard play a respectable game?
You are right it's not the best way to predict an outcome but it's the fastest and easiest. Too mich time and trouble to look up stats and analyze different aspects. Even stats are not the ideal predictor. That's why they don't vote a champion in anymore.
Wilder brought up what I think the biggest issue was (and mentioned during game). Their secondary is so good and they just played man press and we couldn't get off the line. I'm surprised they didn't have more sacks than they did.

Agreed on their secondary.
Hehe did you see SW move? Under normal circumstances (average QB) they would have had a bunch.
Holy cow, he looked like TH on speed.

Tech beat Boston College 49-0 at Lane stadium last year. Half our team is hurt and we have a freshman QB and lost 38-0. Idk why but its little things like that, that make me feel better about Saturday.
I didn't get a chance to watch the game & haven't seen the game replay yet, so I'll just be responding to some general sentiments in this thread.

Bud Foster's entire MO is to make an offense one-dimensional - usually, it's stuff the run repeatedly to make the opposition throw the ball to beat us. With Lawry injured and Wilder deciding to start a 17-year old true freshman, that was always going to be the plan.

As some of you noted, our secondary is very good. Bud leaves them on islands (especially the CBs) for the majority of the game, so the teams that usually have success against VT's secondary are usually going over the top of the defense or winning jump balls (the ECU gameplan) or spreading us way out and hitting underneath routes repeatedly to devastating effect until they lull you with a deep ball (see WVU and Syracuse).

Bud's been doing this really well for a long time, so I wouldn't turn on your offense yet. I'm not looking forward to facing Stevie Williams in a couple years once he's got more experience.

Good luck to you guys the rest of this year. Hope those who made the trip to Blacksburg enjoyed the experience too. Hang tough in C-USA this year, I'll be rooting for you guys. Gotta spread the VA love!

Thanks. Truly a class act. 04-bow
Glad we have a long term series with VaTech.

The inability of our receivers to break away from the DBs of both UNC and VT on single man coverage was glaring.

Just a thought

I was very impressed with the way the vt faithful acted. Students, fans, and alums had nothing but nice things to say. I was told multiple times, "welcome to Blacksburg." Very classy bunch.
They won't be acting nearly as nice this Saturday night.
