God I hope we don't schedule Liberty. No reason to except that they're close, and were already playing Tech and UVA so I couldn't care less about playing them. Factor in Falwell and their "academics" and it's a lose-lose-lose proposition to me.
guys, guys, guys.... we need 6 wins to be bowl eligible... let's take em where we can get em!

This. It will help offset some any losses from VT or other big schools we have scheduled.
We played them when we were both FCS. What makes anyone think we will not play them when we are both FBS?

And their money! Let's take their money!

I like money. Let's do that
I don't think we will be affected since ODU will never be the Notre Dame or BYU of the East anyway. I don't think we will be competing for the same recruits.

I've noted that some say they will not be successful. What parameters determine if they are successful or not? I believe they just want to see how far they can go in FBS. They have improved their position by getting out of the Big South. Apparently, they are not in it to make money. It will be interesting to see who they get on their schedule. I guess the only way they can fail is if they don't get any games.

Not sure if I would like us to play them. A close away game, but not a big time oppenent. I just hope we stay better than them. The FCS game with them was very competitive.
Had Idaho not been replaced for 2019 yet, these guys would have been a good team to play against.

Take their money :) and fill the FBS game at the same time.

Winning a National Championship is great and it is a matter of great pride.
That feat won't get the average college football watcher's attention. At the FBS level as a G5 member or being an independent that's not ND or BYU, winning a game against a program like Louisville, Oklahoma or Florida is. Boise State, Houston, ECU, Georgia Southern and App State are G5 programs that major P5 programs fear. Even ODU put a scare on Pitt and NC State in 2013 and 2014. We made NC State play us hard because they know what we are capable of doing-- as a premature FBS program and if it were WKU, La Tech or USM, NC State would have lost! JMU fans are upset, because they feel like they would be more competitive at the FBS level than Liberty would be. They got a taste of upsetting a P5 program a few years back. They want to play more P5 schools and I feel like they would be legit and a better fit in doing so than Liberty. I can tell you now, Liberty will not recruit very well and I wish its AD good luck in turning that program into ND!!!

Not at all sure this is correct. Falwell is all about money and I'm sure he has figured out a way to leverage FBS football into more donations from his base. Pay attention to his solicitations to his online e students and church supporters. I guarantee he'll be asking for more $$ to support football.

He can probably find the money but can he find the walk the straight and narrow players?
Seems the question is will the persona and baggage of LU override the benefits of scheduling LU?

Perceived Benefits - close proximity, easy for fan travel, 4 hour drive, larger traveling fan attendance vs. air travel. Recruiting benefit/showcase for both.

Perceived Detriments - early ODU losses would be worse for ODU than a LU victory

Short term - LU is where ODU was just a few short years ago; a new FBS team searching for identity and credibility.

Long term - LU takes initial losing lumps, snatches an occasional unexpected victory and becomes stable opponent, or tanks and becomes weak detrimental victory for ODU, but a FBS victory counts towards 6+ wins

Intangibles - LU will likely become the most despised, hate-to-lose team on many team's schedule. As LU improves and excels, likely will stimulate new and occasional ODU fans to participate due to LU being a lightning rod with it's political/social/moral issues.

So, is it worth it for ODU? The safe bet is yes. The strong opposition expressed to not playing LU will be directed to beating LU at all costs.

I don't feel like I'm gonna get all fired up about beating Lu at all costs. I don't visualize this is we must beat the Christians, Even if we are the Lions.
LU's all time record in FCS is 211-203. Hardly a juggernaut. Why should anyone expect this to change?

Exactly. Not to mention that their recruiting pool isn't likely to expand much. It is what it is.

It wouldn't be about beating Christians, it would be about beating Falwell and the "education" Liberty provides.

Well even that doesn't turn me on.
