Not sure if that truck is something the school uses on a regular basis, official marketing move, or a HUGE fan.

Did it look like this?

On the other hand, for a school looking for an identity and trying to build a reputation, I'm not sure associating ODU with online is a smart move.

All the ads on the train cars are also for ODU Online (not that I disagree with your opinion).

Also, the lion shield for ODU Online is slightly different; there's four different shades of yellow/orange where it's white on the typical shield. I thought it was just a graphic designer trying to make it stylized, but it seems like a concious effort by ODU:

online.ODU.edu/metro

I don't get why.

Edit:

Orange Metro Line maybe?

It’s that way on the green line too.
That's ODU's military accent color (see page 21);

Looking through that ODU brand book is so depressing. We have the worst branding. Idea fusion is pathetic and we cant even come up with a true logo.
(04-19-2018 05:44 AM)smudge12 Wrote: [ -> ]To be honest, I'm not sure why we have to have a military-specific color campaign. It seems unnecessary, but maybe there's a good explanation.

Perhaps they are trying to separate the ODU brand from the ODU Online brand. That could be why they're using the athletic logo and the differing color scheme.

Either way, it's a good example of why they hired the Spurrier Group. Hope we start to see a better, more focused approach in marketing going forward.

Thanks! Not sure how it's military though lol:

"The military accent color is a compliment to our primary brand colors for use in print or digital publications with a military theme. The Office of Strategic Communication & Marketing may add additional, temporary colors to the collection to support specific campaigns. These are not permitted outside of those specific marketing campaigns."

To be honest, I'm not sure why we have to have a military-specific color campaign. It seems unnecessary, but maybe there's a good explanation.

Thing is, I've never seen yellow used with anything military. I'm a Vet and am active with the Student Veteran Association and the Military Connection Center. Nothing I've ever received from them via flyers, e-mails etc... has had yellow on it. The few friends I have that are taking classes from Dahlgren and on a base in Washington State said they can't remember anything yellow and ODU.

I just googled ODU veterans and this ad is one of the first to pop up;

Thanks for posting that. Personally I've never seen the yellow out in the wild.

On a side note, the person in the picture is leaving in a few weeks. That will be our 2nd Director of the Military Connection Center to leave within the past 3 years.
The senior design expo was yesterday. Lots of employers were there checking out the projects.

[Image: 2zf1now.jpg]

I have the pdf if anybody wants me to send them the list of the projects that got invited to the expo.
The event seemed to be a big hit with the companies that were there. I can see this becoming a much bigger thing in the future. The Dean also passed out "ODU ENGINEERING ALUMNI" car stickers to help advertise the program.

I've sent an e-mail asking about them for you two. I'll let you know what they say.
Just came back from a short vacation trip to Seattle. While there, I stopped at the Chick-fil-A in Bellevue for lunch. Had my "Old Dominion Monarchs" hat on and this young guy, could have been a manager-in-training type employee, walked up to me and asked "Where is Old Dominion located?" After I said Norfolk, Virginia, he came back with "Oh, I see a number of trucks with the name Old Dominion written on them all over - ". I immediately interjected, didn't allow him to finish his statement, by suggesting he may be referring to a different entity, a Freight Line with same name. Much to my surprise, he quickly re-asserted himself by saying, "Yes, of course, I knew that. Old Dominion does very well in basketball and has been making waves after recently starting Div. 1 Football. Academics are very good as well."

Granting he may not have known the difference between ODU and the Freight Line, it felt good to hear those comments about ODU coming from a State of Washington resident, so I complemented him on his knowledge of national college sports and went on to devour my lunch.

Were you there for the Tulips festival? We returned from Seattle last week from a vacation too and had a similar encounter on the Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry with a dude who recognized ODU logo on my T-shirt and started talking about our Basketball program and he was not aware of the fact that we now have FB program playing in FBS. He seemed and had mostly nice things to say about ODU. Man i could see why Washington Huskies love to Boatgate. Campus was nice and had tons of waterfront real estate. Would love for us to have the ability to boatgate sometime in the future.
I don't have a picture of it but ODU has been putting ads on the DC metro and metro buses recently. They're great, but the only issue is they are in YELLOW. Why would we do that? The ODU shield logo and "Old Dominion University" is in yellow with a dark blue backdrop, which kind of looks like black. Did a VCU grad design these?
