Apparently both their 1st and 2nd string qb's went out with concussion like symptoms. Coached talked about possibly playing redshirt freshman qb at ODU.

Hmm. As ODU fans well know, playing a freshman QB is not necessarily a bad thing. At the same time, we've also had an unfortunate experience with the redshirt freshman QB thing.

It will be interesting to see what the line is for USM. I am anticipating the Monarchs being favored by 3 1/2 to 6 points.

If we beat these guys, a nine-win season is a distinct possibility.

Our biggest challenge will be stopping Ito Smith.

I am really looking forward to this game.
I just hope we maintain focus this week. It will be tough with the huge accomplishment of getting bowl eligible.
Apparently their rush defense isn't all that good.

Ray Lawry is gonna eat.

I did not know that. So who ended up finishing the game at QB? I assume the redshirt was last year and they're not pulling his redshirt this year.
Odu will need to do something it has not done in years.......beat a FBS team with a winning record.

04-rock Lets get win 04-rock

These teams we beat have a chance to finish with a winning record!

UTSA 5-4
Charlotte 4-5
No worthly but Hampton 4-4
On Offense - Spread
QB Nick Mullens is a 61% passer who has thrown for almost 2600 yards@ 8.3yds/per. He has 19 TDs but 10 INTs. He does not run at all(good news for us). Between he and backup Parker Anderson, USM rolled up 404 yards passing against Charlotte.
Someone posted that he was hurt and might not play. I cannot confirm that.
Primary RB is 5'9" 195 lb Ito Smith who averages 5.8 yard/carry. Certainly better than What we saw at Marshall but not any better than, or maybe even as good as, UTEP and Aaron Jones.
USM passes much better than it rushes
We match up well, as our defensive weakness, our rushing D, goes against just an average or less rushing offense.

On defense - 4-3
USM is less than stellar. Recently their rushing defense has been worse than swiss cheese.
Our tandem of Lawry and Cox could have career days.
While at first glance it might appear that the USM pass defense is respectable, much of that is because lately teams have had such success running on them that there has been no need to pass.
We should be able to pass on them about like we did on Marshall.

All in all, USM has not improved over the course of the season, indeed they seem to have deteriorated somewhat.

The ESPN predictor now has us at 58.4% to win.

We will win this, and if we are "on", at home, we might win big.
04-cheers
USM will arrive with an attitude next Saturday. They loss to Charlotte! UNCC should be a legit rival for us.

A running back finished the game at qb.
He threw one pass. ...interception.

If Mullens is out, I guess that is good for ODU. He shredded us last year.
Charlotte shocks Southern Miss, Mullens leaves with injury

I just really liked the last line that said USM faces a hard road trip to Old Dominion next week!
Gatorade bath notwithstanding, we have accomplished nothing yet. This is a must win.
The team needs to forget about being bowl-eligible and realize the gravity of this game. Southern Miss is coming to FF/SB, with a hobbled roster and wounded pride. It would do a lot for them to beat us in our house when we're coming off a big win over Marshall. I prescribe the same thing that I did for the Marshall game: cool, calm, and methodical football. Attack their weakness, divert them away from our weaknesses, and win the damn game for the glory of the empire...erhm...Monarchs

Agree totally... Marshall is a bad team and we didn't flop. Southern Miss is a pretty good team and we are suddenly thrust into the favorite role against a good team. Bobby and the other coaches have a lot on their plates this week.
USM sure got some leaks in their defense. Charlotte ran all over them. First play for Charlotte from scrimmage was a big run.

Kaliff Phillips is a big, fast back. If Charlotte had played their current QB, vice Olsen, the game would have been more competitive. Better passing threat (and scrambling) opens up the running game. They have been on a roll since they pulled Olsen in the 4th quarter of our game in Charlotte.

This is overblown. We heard the same about Marshall this past week, about how they couldn't let the seniors down and they'll do whatever they have to do.

They were blown out.

They haven't?
