Looks like it was announced Aug 28th last year. There really seems to be an overall lack of online previews/hype about college basketball in general this off-season. Not nearly as much as in year's past, not just for NIU, just all of college basketball. From what we have heard though, this home schedule seems like a dud again. It just baffles me that we cannot get one big game at home, a lot are having this problem though not just NIU. I am surprised with Frazier's ties, that a 1-1 could not be arranged with Wisconsin.

Not really thinking we will ever get a big time school to NIU, but what about Bradley, ISU, Loyola, or SIU? These are the schools we ought to be able to schedule 1-1's with, and they are actually opponents that would draw local interest.

Wisconsin is a school that has proven to go to smaller venues in the past, that would be one I would not give up on. They even came to Chick Evans in 1999-2000

And that happened to be the best damn NIU bball game I've ever been to. After we beat them, Wisconsin went on to the Final Four that year.

I'd be all over those games. Any one of those could, feasibly, turn into a fun "fight for IL" type game. (obv with the looming picture of U of I in there too, but lets play em, eff it)
We used to play Wisconsin in the Rockford Metro Center, too.
If you want to get more fans to the convo then our non-conference schedule should look like this. Two power5 schools on the road. One game against the likes of Aurora, Roosevelt. As many D1 Illinois schools as you can get. EIU, WIU, SIU, Bradley, ISU, Loyola, UIC. Go play at DePaul, Northwestern and Illinois. Play away and home games against Horizon league teams. Play 8-9 non-conference home games. This is not asking too much. If you cannot get this done you will not grow your fan base. There is no reason to travel to California. Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois are enough traveling for non-conference away games! I know I'am going to be completely disgusted when I see the non-conference schedule.
Takes two schools to agree....Just because we want them they may not want us. Its the $$$$$$$!!!!
We have played most of those schools at the convo before. Many of them while Patton was here. It has to get done! No excuses!

I think UIC and Loyola should be an automatic on all 3 of the schools schedules. For that matter so should ISU. I agree, nothing to be gained to go to Cal Riverside or Idaho or to have Boise St come in.
When northern was winning five games a year Bradley, Eastern Illinois, Loyola, Depaul, etc. would readily agree to schedule the Huskies. Many Illinois Universities would even come to DeKalb during those lean times. Now that northern is much improved such natural, geographic rivals want no part of the Huskies especially in Dekalb. It ain't like Montgomery is not trying to schedule these teams They just won't schedule home and homes

Yes, I am sure other Illinois schools want no part of the big bad Huskies who had their first decent season in a very long time.

That sounds very much like the old argument that we'll never get decent schools to play us in football in DeKalb.
I always thought it would awesome if 8 of the in state schools would hold an annual Land of Lincoln tournament. I'm guessing it may not be a huge money maker, but it would still be fun. Imagine having NIU, ISU, Bradley, UIC, Loyola, WIU, SIU, and EIU play at AllState or the Sears Centre for a 3 day tournament in November. Maybe even DePaul or Northwestern would join the fun. Not much to gain for U of I, so I doubt they would have any interest.

That would be a fun tournament. You are right though, money drives these tournaments and I doubt there would be a corporation willing to spend the cash, nor would there be enough people willing to make the trip up north to fill one of those two arenas.

It would be nice to have four games on the Friday after Thanksgiving and then play a double header on Saturday with the championship on Sunday.

I still shake my head when I think about what each of those teams looked like when they came on the floor. My buddy is a UW alum and we went to the game and he looked at NIU and laughed. It looked like a varsity vs. fresh/soph game. Not sure if Bennett was still trying to settle on a rotation or his kids weren't happy about something. It was about the last meaningful game played in DeKalb and especially at the old field house. Which was about one third full that night.
You mean to tell me that other Illinois schools are afraid to play a 500-MAC NIU team with mostly underclassmen in Dekalb? I don't buy it! It's more likely that they just can't get their schedules to work out. We cannot continue with the horrible home non-conference schedule. If this is the best schedules we can come up with then stop charging people for tickets or give up the basketball program! I don't believe for a second you can't get a home game with Eastern Illinois or UIC.
Being better at basketball should greatly help better teams to the Convo. This isn't football. Basketball teams want to play quality competition

There is a home game vs UIC this year.
Feel better?
