Oddly enough, Woodrow Wilson (yes, Wilson Hall's namesake) was likely more of an actual racist than Jackson, Ashby, Burress and Lee combined.

A quick Google search of some of his quotes will make your hair curl. He was an elitist, a KKK apologist, bigot, and all-around douchebag. But he hated blacks, Asians, and even southern European immigrants alike. So he had that going for him.

ehh close but not quite. All 3 were celebrated on the same day until 2000 when Governor Gilmore proposed splitting the day into 2 separate holidays given the incongruous nature of their accomplishments. Virginia separately recognizes Lee–Jackson Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Wasn't Lee-Jackson Day moved to the Fri before King Day? I always found it a great conversation piece to have Lee-Jackson-King Day, as few people seemed to get the irony, almost a double irony if you will, given Lee and especially Jackson's lack of support to the institution of slavery.

Yeah, go read the entire speech that quote came from. There is no defending the quote, obviously, but read the rest of it. Some if it is actually interesting - racial hatred aside, of course.

JMU Dunk - I don't hold grudges for those that fought for the south or the north. In my deleted post I touched on the fact that they knew one way of life and that is what it was. No problems there. But I find it comical that people defend a flag for its "history" and fail to recognize it's racial beginnings when the creator of the flag said the above. It's not pulling "one quote from 600,000 men", it is pulling a quote from the guy that designed the confederate flag (except they changed it cause it looked too much like a surrender flag haha oh the irony).

The WaPo had an article about this the other day. While the South was desgregated, the civil service was desegregated, so whites and blacks could work side-by-side in offices in DC and elsewhere. Wilson enabled the introduction of rules that, when they didn't push blacks out, caused screens to be built in offices separating black workers from white workers. In some cases where black employees had to work in locations with whites all around, special cages were built around their desks. The Post article had quotes from a meeting Wilson had with a group of African-American religious leaders and civil rights activists calling him out on how these actions did not meet with his campaign rhetoric; he says that it would take at least 100 years for such prejudices to go away, and when the leader of the group points out that he has reversed changes already in place, Wilson says he's being offensive and demands that he never return to talk to him.

This thread is generated from the feelings of how violent today's society has become but wouldn't it be honest to say this thread explains some of the exact reasons it's going on???

The whole world is going mad.....in a society that thinks everything is offensive....how much longer till bloodshed occurs because of the divisive nature of this country? A dangerous game is being played and those in power and in the media are responsible for spreading hate toward each other and making everything a powder keg. Too add, it is a shame that people think a symbol or a name of a person is the reason for racism or for their feelings being hurt. The fact is, only you can control your own thoughts and feelings. It is you who is responsible, not a symbol, not a name on a building, you. Can a symbol or a name on a building kill people? Can it be the reason for racism? NO, why, because it is the individual that is racist. If we claim that certain symbols or names are the reason for hate, then we better get rid of the American flag for causing slavery in America, for murdering Indians, for sending the American Japanese into concentration camps, and so much more, we better get rid of the automobile, because the automobile has been known to run people over. See how stupid, idiotic, and out of touch people are becoming? A powder keg waiting to happen and that is unfortunate....

A. Todays "society" is far less violent than it was only a scant 20+- years ago. Look it up. We've just become far less open to opposing viewpoints, perhaps on both sides. Now we can't discuss and have conversation, we must demonize. Disagree with me?!? You MUST be a ..., ..... Whatever that may be.

Honestly I could care less about the buildings names considering that's not gonna change how people feel about each other. I was merely stating the obvious when looking at these comments as well as yours that IMHO today's society is creating a fear amongst the powers that be to at least try an erase the thought of another war of rights and race. I'm not sure what you were referring me to when you said You must be a ......but then you start talking about being sensitive and chilling which is ironic. Most of today's generations know nothing about the past that the building names speak of except for what they've learned in school or what they've been taught by relatives or friends. To some it was a great part of history and to some it was a bad part of America's history I just feel that equality is what most races want not all but most and when people get sensitive towards change when it comes to equality feelings like yours are shown.
