In light of the recent backlash against anything Confederate has there been any talk of changing the names of Jackson and Ashby Halls?
Stop. Why ask?

I am hoping that the current insane knee jerk reactions aren't infecting our beloved campus. That is all.

+1. Thank you.
Don't start the discussion.

Why not and who are you to determine what can be discussed in an off topic thread? I don't really want to start a divisive discussion, I just want to know if any of this madness has hit our campus.
I'm surprised no article (that I've read) has mentioned the famous General Lee statue in our state house. There are many icons like that in our capitol building and grounds that will likely be moved one day.

I thought it was a valid question. There are news stories all over about colleges across the country possibly taking down statues and renaming buildings that associate with confederate leaders. I would certainly hope that it doesn't come to that (changing the name of the buildings) but these days, it seems like anything goes...
Wonder what Dr. Clive Hallman would think of that. One of my favorite professors at JMU. Among other offerings, he also taught a course called "The Old South".
Oh, God have mercy. It's coming, I guarantee it.
I doubt the buildings get renamed.

Bigger question - When will Virginia stop recognizing Lee-Jackson day in January?
I just didn't want idiots to start "solving" problems that don't exist like renaming the buildings.

Has it moved beyond confederate flags? I haven't paid attention very closely.
Yes, it has. For example, there is a specific movement in Portsmouth, VA to remove the city's civil war statues. The kind of statue that dot the map in small towns all across the south.

Have you seen any press release put out by our school, which would likely be communicated through various channels like facebook or twitter? No? Then the answer is no.

Do we also know for certain that Jackson hall is named after Stonewall Jackson? There are a lot of Jacksons throughout history.

If we really want to get technical, James Madison was one of many 18th century men who owned slaves. Dare we rename the school to not offend?

I hear UVA is going to distance themselves from Thomas Jefferson

Really!? I hadn't heard that. Could you give some specifics? I know Jefferson wasn't perfect, but he was the founder of the school and most UVA people I know rave about him still.
Buildings and statues will be safe right up until some dirt-bag goes out and takes some lives and it is uncovered that he was wearing a t-shirt with Lee on it and his home has a lot of confederate souvenirs both inside and out.

Oh yes, as others have pointed out, the idiocy is spreading. More examples..

Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell is calling for Jeff Davis's statue to be removed from KY statehouse.

I hope not, since he would have sided with the Union has state lawmakers decided to not secede. He was loyal to his state. His state should remain loyal to him m

I believe that was sarcasm.
