Joel Ferguson, chairman of the MSU Board of Trustees, said that’s because the state slashed support to public universities years ago, and the funding has not been fully restored.

We’re among the lowest states in the nation for state funding,” said Ferguson, pointing to reports by the College Board showing that Michigan is fifth from the bottom nationally.

And you're correct Steve you don't live here and don't pay taxes here. No disrespect but its easy for you to talk about budget increases when it doesn't come out of your own pocket. I appreciate your views on many topics and I honestly am not trying to flame you here with my response.

Super and I live here, work here, pay taxes here, have our families here and some of my children are in college. For example did you know why MSU crows about its athletic programs its DEAD last in the Big 10 in what it pays its grad associates for research and development?
MSU athletics is self-funding so what the university pays it’s grad assistants in research is irrelevant to athletics.

Just a perspective on what's important at MSU these days.
Ypsilanti laid off 18 teachers after the end of the school year. Because i collect social security disability i can no longer substitute as much as years past. I am limited to 1,000 and since there is no school in summer that cuts my income by 4,000 a year they will not let me average for full year it's month to month. Also walmart is now taking away possible subs because they are paying more and now schools are facing even greater budget cuts when the state cuts funding this fall.
Not sure that they are parallel situations, Virginia and Michigan (although I believe most states did better financially in FY2015 than projected) here is the story on Virginia's budget situation for the fiscal year ended two weeks ago.

Virginia did much, much better than projected and a gloomy projection turned out unwarranted as the economy continues to grow nicely. (In states like Virginia, Michigan, etc. revenues can easily come in say a 1/2 - 1B or more higher than expected).

That's why I suggested that very strong revenue (from economic growth) can handle most of the shortage in road funding and not have to steal monies from higher education.

Part of the road funding in Michigan is to make government smaller by lowering the income tax by a small percentage (which isn't a tax cut since gasoline taxes will exceed the "tax savings" love when politicians shift taxes or increase them on part of the population and not the next which is in a sense socialism at it s finest) and slashing general fund spending by over $700 million per year. Of course in Michigan we like to take from the poor so we'll eliminate the remaining earned income credit for the working poor that we didn't eliminate to give business their 1.8 billion dollar decrease which of course was raised by a 1.8 billion dollar increase on Michigan individual taxpayers. And of course there are billions of dollars of uncashed job tax credits issued by Engler, Grandholm and Snyder which will play havoc with state budgets for decades to come.

Reminds me of what a stockbroker once told me: "There are no free lunches on Wall Street."

In these cases someone has to foot the bill (pay taxes), be it corporations, middle income taxpayers, the working poor, etc. and that is when the food fight begins...
Sounds like you all have quite a fight to deal with if Michigan's government isn't being fiscally responsible and unfairly burdening individual taxpayers. I'm sorry to hear that.

Virginia has not increased state funding for higher education in quite awhile also, but the cuts haven't been as dramatic. Still, tuition at ODU went up a little over $500 a year for 2015-2016. Basically, undergrad tuition (including fees) is $9,800 for the academic year, which is probably comparable to EMU.
