I've never heard that from anyone, however, Nashville currently has 8 or so high rise buildings either proposed or under construction right now.

Please.

You should hear people in Germany when they talk about Memphis. Or Vancouver. Or Scotland. Or Watford, UK. Or anywhere that doesn't have the "but Memphis is where the blacks live" mentality.

This is entertaining me on a boring Friday morning for sure.

Funny that you brought up Germany seeing as I grew up in a military family. Stuttgart if you're curious...not the one in Arkansas (just in case whoever said they want to move to Arkansas gets confused).

I absolutely love how determined you all are to prove that Memphis is AWESOME and that Nashville SUCKS by completely disregarding the argument proposed by someone (Memphis vs. Nashville) and since have replaced that with Nashville vs. the World.

To the clowns trying to compare Nashville to NYC, Philly, Chicago, Seattle, etc., just stop. You're giving me a good laugh because it honestly makes me think you don't understand the difference between population density, metro sizes, urban core sizes, etc. and how they determine how and why a city grows. However, I consider it fair to compare Nashville to Austin, Charlotte, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Louisville, etc.

I'd love more anecdotes and pictures if y'all have the time.

Really all that we are doing is pointing out that Nashville sucks less. I think Memphians know that their city kind of sucks compared to other cities. But it's our city and we love it so when we hear Nashvillans ditch our city we're like wait a minute Nashville you suck to.

My point was completely and utterly lost on you.

You keep trying to make this about "memphis vs. nashville." My point has absolutely nothing to do with comparing memphis to nashville or austin or bangalore or [insert city of your choice here].

Here, I'll try to simplify it for you:

1. Memphians don't hate nashville as you keep implying. I'll be there next week (I'm there often).
2. Nashville people often tell visiting mempians that there city sucks and by proxy they suck. I've literally had someone in Nashville tell me I live in "N***** Town." A professional. During a meeting. Sadly, this was one of the more direct statements I've encountered but the tone and messaging was not an isolated occurrence.
3. Memphians get tired of hearing this
4. This attitude (anti-Memphis) is not prevalent everywhere. I've traveled. A lot. 50 weeks a year for over 6 years and a different city for many of those weeks. In traveling you get to hear people's perceptions of your city when the "where are ya from" conversation comes up over lunch or dinner or in meetings. Nashville people have disproportionately bad things to say about memphis. By far. This has NOTHING TO DO with comparing memphis to any city and EVERYTHING TO DO with Nashville attitudes.

I don't know how much more simple I can make it - maybe it will sink in this time.

Congratulations on growing up in Stuttgart. You deserve a cookie.

No. No you didn't. At all. Your statement in bold above makes that readily apparent. Your entire, premise was that "Memphians hate nashville because of the Titans" (asinine, btw) and then you got stuck on the comparison of the two cities - a point I never argued.

I'll try to simplify things for you in the future.

Memphis is awesome to me...I was born here, grew up here, my family is from the area, and I've made my home here...if I didn't think it was awesome, why would I live here?

Nashville is just too country/twang for my taste...I don't enjoy their music, they do a bad imitation of our food, I don't like their downtown nightlife...it's like you can't understand that whats "awesome" and what "sucks" is a matter of OPINION...and not everyone has the same opinion as you. (I know, crazy talk to someone like you)
Yeah go back to the beginning of this thread. Nobody was even talking about Nashville until some dic$ weed had to post a picture of the Nashville skyline in a Memphis thread. Which really proves our point, Nashville fans have a hard own against Memphis. And like I keep saying hey Nashville you suck too.

Nashville area for 7 months...worked at the Green Hills Apple Store...didn't enjoy it. (edit: Nashville is what I didn't enjoy...Green Hills is a nice mall, and the store there had a decent manager)

Agreed. And Nashville does not have the Mighty Mississippi on its doorstep. Our river view from the bluffs cannot be matched, esp. when you add in the soul, history, and hospitality of this region.

Little Rock is the most boring place to be on a weekend.

I'd like to have both, like Philly. I keep bringing it up, but the Trinity would have added some great, modern diversity to our skyline.

Maybe One Beale can borrow from that design, as well as add some ornamentation that few of the newer buildings have. I think only the Morgan Keegan building is a recent building with a spire or crown. 100 North Main has something but that's from the 60s. The others are older than that.

The Morgan Keegan building (now has a new name) was built to be a reflection of and pay homage to the Lincoln American Tower which it sits in front of on the bluff. The spire and the oval and the square windows mimic the best design elements of the Lincoln American Tower.

Can you please post another link to the Trinity pictures? I thought its design was really cool, and I had never even heard of it.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the passion and commitment that the Carlisle family has displayed for the One Beale project is a good sign that whatever the new design for the project, it will be first class, and be a signature development for the skyline.

Regardless, I can hardly wait to see the new renderings.

I much prefer the sterick building to that expensive batman looking thing in Nashville.

Agreed. And Nashville does not have the Mighty Mississippi on its doorstep. Our river view from the bluffs cannot be matched, esp. when you add in the soul, history, and hospitality of this region.

I'm not going to build up my hope with the upcoming changes with the One Beale design. Maybe with the fall of 100 North Main, that pushes the availability into one, two, or three near term tower projects. If One Beale doesn't have a hotel component, and if HRC happens and has a limited height, then perhaps a third building/tower with a hotel component would be justified down the road. But, if HRC has unlimited height, then that could take the remaining supply that is left for short term business after the Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn Express are built on 4th. I would like to see them take the remaining block on/around the Lansky building, and build/incorporate the cafe, a museum, a theater, and the hotel. Putting parking in the pedestal could boost it a few more stories too.

But, one thing at a time. Make One Beale nice, tall, modern.

It's all about perspective. Nashville suck just a little less than Memphis. Like I said before, Nashville builds one Batman tower 20 years ago and from hearing their citizens talk you would think they were effing Dubai. It's a joke. Shut up Nashville.

Nashville is the "it" city and the growth has been crazy. Since Batman, they have built about 5 other high rises and a state of the art convention center and downtown Sounds stadium has started. Others are planned and those are just downtown. If you drive anywhere around the MSA, then you see construction everywhere. We are expected to reach 2M people by 2020.

With that said, if there was a "it" state, then Texas kills everyone with the growth in all those cities.

I get the Nashville hate to some extent, but to hate it because out local government is proactive and the Chamber goes after HQ's everyday is a little petty.

I have said many times that I love both cities, they different and each one offers positives the others do not. Nashville is my home and Memphis is my home away from home.

Quote:Carlisle Corp. is reviving plans for its giant Downtown Memphis development One Beale, which at one time had a price tag of $175 million.

The Memphis-based company will make an announcement "later this summer" about the future of the project at Beale Street near Riverside Drive, said Chance Carlise of Carlisle Corp., who is One Beale's project manager.

Quote:This week's number is 58.2 million.

Dollars, that is. That's the price Memphis-based Carlisle Corp. will get for 56 of its Wendy's fast-food restaurants in Virginia and North Carolina, perhaps with an eye toward funding its massive One Beale development in Downtown Memphis.

Okay I concede we will just start calling it itville. In reality everything that you just said goes to prove my point. All those high-rises you are talking about are nothing but mid size buildings. Small towns in DFW like Plano, McKinney and Frisco are building buildings just as tall if not taller. And they are not called high-rises. But thank you you've just shown everybody on this board exactly what I'm talking about with Nashville citizens. You point to Memphis to show your success against the successes of Memphis. However compare your little successes to the successes of larger or even same size cities all across the US and you are average at best. I'm sorry, but Nashville sucks too.
