The fan should be ashamed of himself even if that's all he said.(which I don't believe). Smart should also be ashamed because violence is not the way to react to somebody running his mouth. It's unfortunate that he had to get suspended, but he needs to learn how to channel his anger in a different way.

Why don't you believe he could have said it? A shove is violence? You get called the "n" word and see how good it feel. Smart is 20 yrs old. That old azz man has lived a lifetime. Too many grown azz folks get off on yelling at young adults playing a game.
Video seems to confirm that's what was said. Surpring how many immediately assumed a racial slur, myself included.

A shove is violence, yes. How many fights have you seen start with a shove. I was saying I don't believe his story of what he said, although I haven't watched the video me referenced. I don't like the n word period. I never have and never will. I don't believe anybody should use the word, but especially when it's used as a slur. I am saying they were both in the wrong in this instance. And yes, the guy in the stands is an old ass man getting off yelling at kids. Agree with that 100%

i also have a very difficult time believing thats what he said. since you asked, i'll tell you why.
Even the biggest idiots in the world realize the implications of yelling such a ridiculous racial slur from that far away (Smart jumped up off the floor and went after the guy, so its not like he was right up in his face when he said whatever it was that caused such anger). I'm not saying that i know he didn't say it, it just seems far fetched to me (granted, there are people that might be dumb enough to say it).

so, i'll turn it around…why do you think he DID say it?

It struck me how old the guy was, as well, but you don't put your hands on someone else. I said the same thing when OJS man got assaulted by Pierre Hamburglar-Niles.

That he called him a piece of crap.

Full disclosure: I've called referees piece of crap before. None came in the stands after me.
And now I'm hearing this guy that made the derogatory comments has apologize and will not attend anymore Tech games. If dude is innocent then why apologize and ban yourself from attending games? Yes Smart could have handle it better but he's a kid. You expect more from a grown azz man!

He's not innocent. He may have not used a racial slur, but what he did was wrong.

You're right, and I never defended the clown. I'm just pointing out that nobody's hands are clean.

Again...why do you accept it as fact that the guy said this.
I only ask bc you asked somebody to explain when they doubted it was said.

There is not even a reaction from Smart if the comment isn't made. Now we're expecting a 19-20 yr old to take the higher road from the negative action of 60 yr old plus male.

Back in 2004, I was in Columbus, OH with Schard, Slinkie, Attalla, MC Blazers and others for the NCAA Dance. UAB had just beat Washington and we were having drinks at a pub next to the arena. There wasn't too many blacks in the place that night and two ignorant white males apparently had drank some courage and decided to tell me n****as didn't belong in the establishment.

MC overheard what they said to me and if not for the bouncers in the place, business was about to be handled. I will not tolerate being called that word and I have no problem beating someone down that refers to me by that name regardless of color or religion.
It has been reported that he did. It has been reported that the same fan has been verbally abusive to players in previous games. Add in that now he is to apologize and be banned from games the rest of the season? Smells to me like there were witnesses to the exchange, or they would not be imposing these penalties on the fan, nor would he be accepting them without making a huge stink.

Both were in the wrong, absolutely... but I grew up in SW Atlanta and have lived all over the south, and white guys better not bust out the N word without understanding the risks involved. It's a sure enough fighting word, and if you invoke it you better be sure of the situation and who you are talking to, and even then it's better never uttered.

Hell, even Richard Pryor quit using it.

I got punched in the head in a soccer game in high school. I walked away from it. As a teammate you should always think about how your actions will effect your team. If I could walk away from being hit at a younger age than smart, I think it's reasonable to think he could ignore an idiot in the stands.

Again, I'm with MB, and really everybody else, the old man was not in the right. Neither person was in the right here. Smart needs to learn to control his temper though. There are some things you just can't do.

Again, I do not condone the name calling. But responding to a racist ***** with physical violence doesn't solve anything. Even if you beat him to a pulp he will still be a racist ***** the next day. And again, we do not know what was said for a fact at this point.

If you are going to keep harping on the racial slur, at least spell it correctly.
