He signed a futures contract. This time of year the teams try to cherry pick from other teams practice squads and other available free agents to get promising players into their organizations well before camp starts and before other teams pick them up. Camps have a 90 player limit. The teams finished the season with 53 plus whoever was in injured reserve. The players signed now will help fill out the 90, and hopefully some will make the team in the long run.
