Rumor is that ODU has dropped the 2014 return game to Charlotte. Anyone know why or more importantly who we replaced them with?
Probably because they would count as an FCS team hosting us as an FBS team. Was wondering if this game would remain put. Looks like it fell through, after all!
Really? That's bummer I was hoping to get down to that game.

This is likely the case.

Hopefully we have a good replacement.
Charlotte should be FBS independent by that year. They are on the same timeline as us and will be full CUSA and bowl eligible members by 2015.

No they're actually a year behind us. For whatever reason they have 2 years as an FCS independent probably self-imposed. IDK.
2 year minimum rule for startups per NCAA.

I believe you have to play 2 years FCS before you can begin the transition to FBS.
Time to jump on that rumored USF home-and-home if it still is or ever was on the table.

I think they have to play two years at FCS, but they can start the transition to FBS in that second year, since the transition period is one year in FCS, one in FBS.

So that would leave us with:

2013 -- FCS, independent
2014 -- FCS (transitioning), independent
2015 -- FBS (transitioning), Conference USA
2016 -- FBS (bowl-eligible), Conference USA

Does that sound right?

Ah, got it, thanks.

There's not a rule against FBS schools visiting FCS is there? I've always thought it was more just the prestige thing and wanting to either get a better return game or a better guaranty if there is no return.

No, it's just exceedingly rare. I remember Western Kentucky visiting a I-AA a few years ago. Maybe UNLV did? But FBS programs are almost always going to be dealing from a position of power when they interact with FCS programs.
This is a ****** move by ODU IMO.

You guys aren't playing for anything next year anyway since you're not eligible for bowls.

I'd understand if we weren't conference mates, but we are.

Just think its a ****** thing to do to a conference mate personally.
So is UVA's 2014 schedule in stone. I see they host Richmond.
No reason to take offense to it. We don't even know the context behind it. What if Charlotte dropped ODU? What if it's not due to Charlotte's FCS status, but because either team has another opponent in line they'd rather play for whatever reason.

We can play for CUSA title and there is loophole for a bowl game if we can impress FBS
Actually, I was looking forward to the trip. Maybe something else did come up.

It'll happen soon enough.
I have no clue, but if I had to guess, the next announcment is an away game at a high-profile BCS school with a nice pay day.

Let the rivalry begin! 04-rock
The main reason I care is because we're probably going to get stuck with some little **** pile of a private FCS school in its place.
