Need to look at who is ahead of them there, basicaly, until you get in the top 25 in the computers, you get nothing in the BCS standings. NIU is 15 spots higher than Bosie St right now, but since they are not in the top 25, there is no difference in the BCS standings.

Huh? What does that even mean?

For what it's worth, NIU is ranked in the top 25 in 2 of the 6 computers. We're also 26th and 27th in two others. Yes, overall the computers hurt us because our schedule is gawd awful. Boise State is not ranked in any of the computers, but I'm not sure what the 15 spots means.

I have attached the BCS standings including all FBS schools. Some interesting stuff. Our "average" computer ranking is 27, Boise is 42. Boise getting a lot of help from the human voters for their #22 BCS rank. With our strength of schedule being as crappy as it is, I guess I am surpirsed the computers have us as high as we are.

In addition to the games listed elsewhere in this post, there are other teams (that may seem a little less obvious) to also root against because it will matter on the margins. For example:
- One of the computer polls utilized (JS) has Vanderbilt ranked 24 (we are not in the top 25 of that computer poll). As such, root for Wake to beat Vandy on Saturday. (In fact, Vanderbilt appears to be ranked in 4 of the 6 computers used according to the BCS Guru site).
- The same computer poll (JS) also has Texas Tech at 21 (again, we aren't ranked in that computer poll), so a Baylor win would potentially help us break through there.
- Also, Ball State beating Miami wasn't listed...and like Iowa, to the extent that teams we played beat other teams, that will help on the margins with our computer ranking. To that end, same goes for Buffalo beating Bowling Green.
The way the BCS standings work, you take the votes from the coaches poll devided by 1475 (max votes), and the same with the Harris poll (except 2875 votes). With the computers, you drop the highest and the lowest ranking, so you can throw the Saragin and Billingley polls since those are the high and low polls. Until we get our "computer ranking" average under 25, we get absolutly no points in that third of the formula.

As crazy as it sounds, even a team like Florida State, who is ranked 26 in one computer poll losing to Florida, could help NIU move up, since NIU is #32 in the same poll. At this point, every spot moved up will help NIU pass teams like Bosie who's average is in the 40's. NIU needs to move up on average of about 3 spots in the 4 computers polls to start getting "points" in 1/3 of the BCS formula.
Welp, Kent State's on track be 11-1 going to Detroit. Up 21-0 on Ohio with 5 minutes left in 1st quarter.

No, that's not true. We are getting credit and computer "points" for being ranked in 2 polls, but it's just not enough to get into the top 25. In fact, there are 29 teams currently getting computer points.

We should get a good computer bump from playing Kent, what a great team.
Let me get this straight. You earn BCS "points" for receiving votes in the Harris and coaches polls. Both the Harris and coaches polls are weighted 1/3rd each. The average of the four computer rankings (after eliminating the high and low) constitute the remaining 1/3rd, but to earn BCS points from this particular category you must be in the Top 25 of computer rated schools. Is that correct?

No.
The only thing you need to know about the BCS is that for about half of college football your position is capped at 20, enough said.

Forget it. I found the "official" rules, if you will. NIU earns "points" for those of the 4 computer polls (after eliminating high and low) that have us ranked 25 or better. Talk about complicated.
No help from Iowa, although they played Nebraska pretty much even. Vandenburg has to be college football's biggest disppointment of the year.
BIG game starting now. Even though it's a long shot, go Wazzu!!!!

Time of the month! geesh lol
I guess what confuses me, obviously NIU cannot reach 16 in the BCS standings, so why even focus on them? The only important rankings are the AP and Coaches poll for NIU right now. When you talk about the statistic of "NIU has never finishsed a season ranked", those are in reference to the mainstream Coaches/AP poll, not the artificial computer poll.
i think one of NIU or Kent will be a top 20 team by the end of this week. good luck to us!

The only thing you need to know about Maddawgz commenting on the BCS is that his comments come from the voices in his head which are much different than reality.

Ball State was #12 in the BCS at the end of the regular season in 2008 (before the MACC).

Miami also was ranked very highly at the end of 2003. They were Top 15 that year, and their only loss was the season opening game to Iowa. Sounds familiar.
