These are all BCS numbers, which are irrelevant in two years.

The issues then will be:

1) How much will everyone (including ND) get from the playoffs? and

2) How much will the bowls pay?

Are you saying that the Orange Bowl should pay X to everyone else, but only Y to Notre Dame?

I'm saying that Notre Dame makes what the average BCS school does yearly (1.3 million). The only way the average BCS school can make more than that is to put an additional team into the BCS (then they get 6.2 million extra). I think Notre Dame should have to figure out how to get a second school in if they want the 6.2 million. It is only fair.

I thought I remembered $4.5M... I guess the payout was increased to $6.2M somewhere along the way?

Here is a short article from Espn from Jan, 2011 about the Pac 10 getting a second BCS team and the payout being $6 million. Everything else I found says $4.5 million. So I dont know which figure is correct.

BCS Payouts

The payouts go up over time as the television contract escalates. The ACC isn't the only television contract that is worth more at the end like the Big 2 want everyone to believe. Even the BCS contract is back loaded.

Ooh, may I?

The answer to this question is YES - assuming Notre Dame gets preferential treatment with respect to Orange Bowl selection.

If a Bowl signs a contract with a conference, it is giving preferential treatment to the group and it's paying for the rights to the whole group - so the fee ought to be higher for a group.

However, if it's for a single team, the fee should be correspondingly less.

Think of it this way - ESPN pays BILLIONS of dollars for the TV rights for the ACC - should NBC pay the same for the rights to a single team, even if that team is Notre Dame? Obviously not - you pay on a per team basis; bowl payouts should be no different - whatever a bowl pays for a pool of teams on a per team basis should be the same, regardless of the size of that pool - though I do agree the quality of those teams affects payout somewhat, and in this case N.D. should get more than the average Big East team, for example.

I know... Terry will say "just give Notre Dame all of money in years we qualify and nothing in other years"... but it cannot work that way in this case, because we are talking about a CONTRACT bowl (you don't "earn" your way into it, even though there are minimum requirements) Having a contractual agreement with the Orange Bowl is not the same as earning a spot in the 4-team playoffs - it's more like a TV contract for a single team vs. a pool of teams. If you want to take the all-or-nothing approach with the playoffs, that's between the playoff committee and Notre Dame. Just don't confuse that with the Orange Bowl (or any other non-playoff bowl).
I am merely saying pay each school the same amount if it qualifies for a contract bowl.

This ain't hard.

Then we agree - Notre Dame should be paid whatever an ACC school gets for playing the Orange Bowl (i.e. 1/14th of the ACC's pool money, or possibly 1/15th of the total Orange Bowl payout; e.g. $60M/15 = $4M, or $75M/15 = $5M each). Remember, when an ACC school qualifies, it's the BEST from a pool of 14 teams...
I'm sure that it doesn't matter what we think.

It only matters what the parties negotiate.

I feel pretty confident that ND will come out ok at the negotiating table regarding the Orange Bowl.

But yes, I am saying that every ACC opponent should be paid the same amount, whether they are in the SEC, Big 12, Big East, Big 10 or an independent like ND.

Oklahoma, for instance, should not get a higher amount than ND just because it is a member of a football conference.

Not yet, but in two years..................................

I don't blame you. The only people worse at negotiating than the ACC in the history of this country are the Native Americans who sold Manhattan Island for trinkets, cloth, and hatchets.

Apparently your message didn't get to Swofford...BTW, if you read my posts from the Syracuse Mole...he was almost spot on in predicting the outcome.

Well, looks like I was almost spot on with my prediction as well, only the ACC is worse than the Native Americans. At least they got some use out of the hatchets.
