Sporting News: Longtime refs Tim Higgins, Bob Donato to retire
Quote:He has been to 10 Final Fours, which is more than Jim Calhoun or Jim Boeheim, and left each of them undefeated. Which is not to say Tim Higgins was perfect. He is a game official, so we know it’s unlikely he got every call right.

Higgins will retire from officiating this summer, sources in the Big East Conference told Syracuse Post-Standard basketball writer Mike Waters. He was a member of the Big East’s first officiating team; the league opened for business in 1979.

Official Bob Donato, a Big East regular and a two-time Final Four ref, also is retiring according to the Post-Standard.

Higgins worked well after younger officials such as Gerald Boudreaux and Curtis Shaw retired to become officiating supervisors. He is 66, and StatSheet.com reported he worked 34 games this season, about half what he did two years ago.

Glad to hear it about Higgins. Best of fortune in retirement.

Have you Memphis fans had some run ins with Burr and Higgins? I thought they were just BE refs.

Yep. They are both a disgrace to the game of College Basketball
Burr is generally a better official than Higgins. Both are eminently better than Ted Velentine.
Burr for Retirement, PLEEEEEEASE! 03-weeping
It looks like the Big East is still cleaning house! 07-coffee3
Guys, don't leave "Hollywood" Hightower out of this discussion, or John Cahl, who ejected Cincinnati's Radio announcer in a NCAA tournament game.
Good riddance. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Take Jim Burr with you while you are at it.
Burr, Higgins, Hightower and Cahl can all never officiate another game and it would be fine with me....
