P.S. Smaug did you rip this idea from the Memphis board???

I did see that thread on their board and found it pretty entertaining, and thought it would be interesting to see what we could come up with about our fair city.

It was mostly inspired by summertime boredom, though.

You must be from Birmingham if you think having gravy on a hamburger is a normal thing. (Milo's)

Or if you see Jesus walking around 5 points and don't think twice about it.
You know who Stan Palas and Bobby Mickalotta are, and know where "Glennon Gardens" is located.

Or, if you saw "Blue Moon" Odem pitch his first professional game.
Larry Langford was a TV reporter for WBRC 6.

At least we don't have idiots on our board screaming that it isn't Blazer related and needs to be moved to the NTR forum. 03-lmfao

You might be from Birmingham if you remember when the News and Post Herald covered local racing at BIR, Dixie Speedway and Sayre rather than NASCAR.
Pete's famous downtown --Is it true that "Sneaky Pete" who opened his first store on 8th Ave south is Pete Jr?

Were the two "Radio/ TV Burns" related--"Happy Hal" Burns and "Country Boy Eddy" Burns?

Are you old enough to have sat in your car in Eli's restaurant parking lot to listen live to Tommy Charles broadcast on WSGN from the "Sky Castle" studio. A picture of that scene is on the wall of the Silvertron Restaurant.

I was born at Carraway Hospital which was the one used by employees of Stockham Valve & Fittings.(My dad was a supervisor there during WWII) I grew up in Roebuck (8901 5th Ave North) and later in the Cherokee Garden Apts on 78th St. and attended Barrett School. I was in first grade when a girl was kidnapped off the school playground so an 8 ft fence was built around it that is still there. My brother graduated in 1949 from Woodlawn High school with a kid who went to Howard College in East Lake and on to play and coach FB--He is named Bowden. My neighbor and best friend then was Billy Boyette who became the first Senior Class President of Banks High School and was the Chairman of the group that selected the jet to go on top of the school.

I learned to swim in the East Lake Park pool which was spring fed (which was much colder than Cascade Plunge) which was closed when East Lake became part of B'ham so they had to start chlorinating all public pools. The spring water ran into the lake through small ports allowing small fish and an occassional snake to get into the pool which had a sand bottom. The old pool was filled in and a new one built on the other side of the dressing rooms.

I remember going to Barons games when they were a farm team of the Red Sox and saw Norm Zauchin and Mickey Rutner lead the Southern League in HRs with 27 each. Does anyone remember Walt Dropo or Jim Piersal from their Barons days? Can you throw an "Ephus pitch"? I remember (Eddy) Glennon's Gardens in left field built to provide additional seating for the "Dixie Series"(to 16,000) which the Barons played in many times. I also remember the "Colored bleachers" behind the right field fence in those days. Did any of you see a game in "Sulfur Dell"(home of the "VOLS") in Nashville where the outfielders stood in steps cut out of the slope in front of the fences? How about Ponce de Leon Park (home of the "CRACKERS") in Atlanta. The league also had the Little Rock "Travelers", the Mobile "Bears", the New Orleans "Pelicans", the Memphis "Chicks" and the Chattanooga "Look Outs".

The only "nightspot" in Roebuck was the "Silver Slipper" Club which my dad considered a "dive". In Pinson was the "Ice Cave" Tavern run by my aunt with a small house out back built on a pole where my uncle Percy lived while "crash dieting". He is said to have died there when he passed out from hunger, fell and hit his head on the tub. It was covered statewide in the papers. (You may have heard of his son-Alan Sherman who made several humorous singing LPs with titles that began"My son the--"and his best known tune was "A Letter from Camp" that began "Hello Mother, Hello Father")

Did any of you go to YMCA Camp Cosby off Old Springville Road for Day-Camp or 1 or 2 week resident camps for older kids? It is now out on Clear Creek Branch of Logan Martin Lake. Any one remember the YMCA on 20th Street North between 5th and 6th Ave No.? It was near the old Joy Young Restaurant location. Does anyone recall Linn Park being called "Capitol Park" by old timers because it was originally set aside as a site for the new State Capitol to be built there between City Hall and the County courthouse? Did you know that nobody realized there were swastikas in the carved design in the black marble on the 21st St. entrances to the Jeffco courthouse until after WWII-They are still there.

Did you know the proprietor of the driving range that was originally across Montclair from what would become Eastwood Mall and later moved to its last site off Crestwood Blvd. was Sam Byrd who played with Ruth and Gherig on the "Bronx Bombers" of the 20s?

What were the "other" principal trading stamps besides Sperry & Hutchinson "Green stamps"? A&P gave "Plaid stamps" and Krogers gave "Top Value stamps".

Joe Rumore on "The Mighty 690" WVOK, the only 100,000 watt station in B'ham with its tower at Fair Park. Speaking of Fair Park, does anyone remember WAQY across the street and their ads "Have you done your Layton and Charles today?"

One mentioned the band "Hotel". Do you remember Vickie Hallman, their "torchy" lead singer? Does anyone remember "Cahaba" a popular band at the Red Carpet Inn lounge?

My son cooked for Mr Steak in Huffman while attending Huffman HS his senior year. Before that he cooked for La Chateau Steak House at Eastwood.

Did you know that Avondale Park was the original site of the B'ham Zoo early in the 20th century? That's when the pond was built for the zoo animals which included elephants. It was also the reason for the amphitheater and the "castle" on top of the hill.
If you have been to llakeview and drove down lakeshore, yet didn't see a lake.

If you know the lyrics to Mark and Bryan songs such as Mt. Brook girl and bye bye bo.

When you order a coke, you expect the server to ask, "which kind?"

You know what a "do-da Day" is

You can fill in the lyrics: Southeastern meats, just can't be beat!, Also: Mr. king, Mr. king furniture, there's no darn store with so much credit! and the best one: Where do you go to find the best burgers in town? everybody goes to Milo's

You bought beer when you were underage at Andy's in hoover

At one moment in your life it was 4:00 am and you were at the Upside down plaze.

you know famous fred

you rollerskated at skate station in hoover

It's not hoover high, it's the new berry
Also I forgot, you know a shunnarah

I taught Ricky at Comer Elementary in 1964--my first year with the B'ham schools. The family lived on the next block east.
If you remember Battle's Buffett in Hoover besides the Zayre Dept Store
