It is bad enough they think they would go 1A but to think they would be asked to join the Big 10? 01-wingedeagle

Delusions of grandeur are not all that uncommon on most message boards.

Imagine fans from Big East reading posts by some NIU fans growling about the Huskies joining Big East.

same deal.

True. BUT there is a BIG difference between a average/below avg sports school from 1AA (worse than NU-even in their bad years) talking about going to the Big 11 and a top MAC team going to the BE. I am not even delusional enough to think we could EVER get into the Big11.
If you read the other thread about D-1 football, there was talk of starting a new conference with us if they made the move. I think some here would be interested in that.
Good Lord ISU doesn't even draw for football now, they play all their games on Saturday and barely broke 9K per game last year. THey have a larger undergrad enrollment than NIU and don't even draw half the attendance average that NIU does. Pretty sad for a team that was actually decent last year. THey lost to a BCS bowl team (Iowa St) by only 11 and lost 2 conference games by 3 pts each.

The 1AA programs in this state don't draw very well considering their enrollment

WIU 10552 avg pretty decent for their enrollment size
SIU 9584 avg their enrollment is the same as NIU"s. Very good team, lost by 6 pts to WMU and made it to the quarterfinals of 1AA playoffs.
ISU 9084 avg, their undergrad enrollment is larger than NIU"s and attendance is less than half, decent team 7-4, lost to Iowa St by only 11.
EIU 6182 Considering they were 8-0 in their conference and made the 1AA playoffs U would expect them to draw better than this 02-13-banana 04-rock

Whoa, not even close to being the same deal. NIU could compete in a power conference whereas the Redbirds would have trouble beating even the worst D-1A schools like U of I and Buffalo.

how quickly we forget what nius attendance numbers used to look like.
those other state schools are located far from large metro areas and McComb, Carbondale, and Charleston are smaller communities including nearby hamlets when compared to DeKalb -Sycamore.

Only Bloom/Normal has a decent population base but nothing like what is located within 90 minutes of NIU.

You would think if ISU was really good, perhaps a few college football fans in Peoria may adopt Redbirds & attend games occasionally.

I can almost guarantee if NIU's football team played in Charelston , McComb or Carbondale, it would not avg 26,000.
I have always wondered why ISU hasn't had more success, both athletically and academically........ and how much more success NIU would see, both athletically and academically, with the name Illinois State University.

Just silly pondering points.
Although the thought of Illinois State in the Big 10 is somewhat of a pipe dream, I don't see why ISU couldn't be a logical choice for the 14th membership slot in the MAC. They are only a two hour drive from the Chicago metro area, and Bloomington/Normal is a large an area as most MAC schools.
lmfao
I didn't check the thread, but is it one of those threads where they're all puffed up about being Illinois STATE and think that like Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State they would be welcomed into a major conference as a major university in their state?

I hate those threads. They don't get that while they have the name, in reality they're Central Illinois University, fellow travellers with us, SIU, EIU, etc.

Is there one of those emoticons for "hit nail on head?"

lmfao

Or how about all those posts last year about NIU playing a home game against a Big Ten opponent in Soldier Field?

Oh, wait! That might actually happen. 02-13-banana
the thing that bothers me most about ISU is that they believe ISU is better the NIU. I wish we would play them in football just so we could kick their ass.

Yeah, the last time we played them we stole their playbook. :shhh:

That was 2000 and it was 52-0.
ISU shut out NIU - in the fourth quarter - so there.

Wasn't Victor E in at tailback for final fifteen minutes?

Coach called off the dawgs early in that one.

One particular joy was the large number of Redbird fans filling two sections of Huskie Stadium ...........for two quarters.

I recall similar hynee wipings of ISU during the Bork era. They were using the same playbook back then too. The combined score of the two games in 64 and 65 was :
NIU 91 - ISU 6.

Can someone please get the 2006 Akron playbook?
