I have an idea.

I've always figured the MAC presents good opportunities against the spread, but I've never actually tested it.

I'm going to start this season with a hypothetical $1,000 and start "betting" games.

The more I think about it, the more I think it would be a pretty cool contest. Pick a game a week against the spread and see how much money you end up with.

So who wants to join me? Just post in this thread before kickoff Thursday.

These are Sheridan's lines in USA Today:

Thursday:

EASTERN MICHIGAN 4½ Buffalo
Boston College 17½ BALL STATE

Saturday:
IOWA 29 Kent
MICHIGAN NL Miami Ohio
PENN STATE 15 Akron
WISCONSIN 23½ Central Florida
OKLAHOMA 32½ Bowling Green
MARYLAND 14 No Illinois
INDIANA 14 Central Michigan
MINNESOTA 11 Toledo
MARSHALL 14 Troy State

As for me?

I'll lay $500 on Bowling Green. 32½ is sick.
OK. I'm game. But I'll wait until the Miami/Michigan line comes out before I make a desision. I think having a game under their belts is a tremendous advantage, so it will be interesting to see that line.
Me, too. I'll split with $500 each on 1) CMU over Indiana and 2) Toledo over Minnesota.

Thanks for the idea 04-bow

Yer gonna be out of cash unless you hit on one of those. :chair:

Well, I guess you could always go into debt. Should we allow that?
$100 on Toledo over Minnesota and $100 on BG to beat the spread against Oklahoma.
My eyes were bigger than my stomach. I thought it was $1,000 per week, but after re-reading your paost, it was clear you were talking about the season.

But anyway, a bet is a bet. Guess I'll now really be pulling for the Chips and the Rockets.
I'm in and I've got a system. I'll bet half my stake against the Ohio Bobcats against the spread all season long.

My first bet: I'll put $500 on the Pitt Panthers minus the points on Sept 11.
I'll take CMU +14 for $200 and Marshall -14 for $200. I take it there's no vig on these bets(?).

Uhh... You don't know the spread. I can guarantee that game will have an inflated spread. I think Ohio is likely to cover in Pitt.

Even after what happened in Toledo last year, Pitt is still ripe for the picking.

They didn't have a clue against our 3-4 defense in 2002. They had under 200 yards in total offense. Had we not been forcing Dontrell Jackson to throw the ball (was it 4 or 5 ints for him that day?) when he really wasn't capable, we had a shot late in that game. Hawk or any combination of Hawk or Everson won't give the ball away like that.
Pitt is not looking good right now. They didn't have a good Spring and they are having trouble replacing Rutherford at QB and finding a go-to Receiver to replace Fitzgerald.

I don't think Ohio will win the game, but it could be close.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. No matter the spread, no matter the opponent, I'll bet against the Bobcats all season long. I think I'll do very well.

The first game with VMI won't be on the board. So my first bet will be the Pitt Panthers minus however many points it will be. I'm feeling very confident.
I'll take Marshall and Bowling Green. $200 for Marshall and $100 for BUGS.

I'm thinking that even 50 to 21 wins the spread and if Oklahoma has 50 BG will get a chance to score a few.
OK, I'll bite. I'll put $500 on Ball State and 171/2 over Boston College.

No vig. And we'll let people go into debt if that's where they end up. Everyone starts with $1,000 and everyone can play up to $1,000 per week -- more, if they have more than $1,000 in their kitty.
I'll put $300 on Marshall and $100 on Bowling Green
Here is where we are. If people want to make changes, that's fine.

OK, I'll bite:

Indiana by 14 over CMU

$250 says CMU beats the spread (at least)

Marshall 14 over Troy State

$250 - Marshall covers

Oklahoma 32 1/2 over BGSU

$250 - BGSU beats the spread

Wisconsin 23 1/2 over UCF

$250 - Wisconsin covers
