I would rather not watch this team in it's current form anymore, so I'm good with no NIT

NIT Selection Watch Thread
There was a time during the Pastner years that I just disconnected from caring about basketball. It made the disappointment easier. Penny brought the excitement back, but I’m finding I am disconnecting again.

You'd better reread what he actually said.

He's not talking about just this season.

He implied that he would NEVER accept an NIT bid again.

Well, theoretically, with the resources available and advantages this program has over the other 13 piles of garbage in this conference, you’d like to hope we’d be getting an auto bid every year.

Sounds like Penny is giving himself a goal - to get the auto bid by being the conference tournament champion every year. Now he better step up or he will have let his mouth overload his coaching abilities.

I don’t know that it was Penny’s choice to make, though. This seems like another off the cuff remark that shouldn’t have been made. This is the Athletic Director’s call.

While I also don’t want to see us in the NIT, what, if any, are the financial implications? If the worry was Penny taking care of his mother, couldn’t Stansbury have stood in? Again, this sort of unilateral, off the cuff refusal probably drives the AD folks nuts

Him spending time with his mother and Stansbury auditioning for his next job is probably the best answer.
Can you imagine the fallout if that happened and Stansbury coasted through the NIT like we should have done in the AAC?

I’m still curious as to the financial impact. Are we passing up ticket revenue through gate splitting? Are we passing up media revenue? Are we contractually obligated through our conference to play in a tournament we are invited to? Or do the travel costs of playing in the NIT outweigh any benefits? We aren’t in the financial position to turn down any possible revenue streams.

If we pass up an NIT invite, I would think the AAC could sue us forthwith the revenue sharing they would lose. Don’t know if the NIT pays enough to cover travel costs.

That would be all that Memphis would need right now. Another controversial thing.

Yes we are giving up revenue. The NIT is now owned by the NCAA, so the NCAA would pay for the travel costs for X number of coaches and players.

Who says they were getting an invite to turn down?

the NCAA removed the auto bids for the conference champions who lose in their tournament. So, we would have.

RE: NIT Selection Watch Thread
I'm glad Penny will decline any invitation take some time off and then start building next year's team. He can't afford to whiff again on the players he wanted. And settle for a bunch of malcontents again.

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2023/10/27/med...ormat.aspx

For the 2024 NIT, conference regular-season champions that do not win their conference tournament or are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT.

Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams (based on the NET rankings) from each of six conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern). The top two teams in the NET rankings not qualifying for the NCAA men's basketball tournament from each conference, regardless of win-loss record, will be selected. Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT.

Once the 12 automatic qualifying schools have been selected, the NIT Committee will select the 20 best teams available to complete the tournament's 32-team field.
