I guy like Viotto has already sat out a whole year and assuming he transfers down he'll probably be looking to play right away. So, to bring him in plus a Taylor Powell-type player that might keep the other from coming. I do agree that would be ideal, but I don't know how realistic. Also...Viotto might be an upgrade right off the bat regardless if someone else were to come in.
In addition to that, what are your guys thoughts on playing a young QB next year? Unless we bring in a TON from the portal, we could have a pretty young offense. At WR you are currently looking at Mitchell and the young guys (Walker, Wood, and whoever else might step up), TE probably guys like Reese and Hoffmann, RB Jaylon should be back but then guys like Brown and Jackson-Anderson. Along the O-line we also might have a fairly young group. I can certainly see why you would want a veteran QB for a group like that, but I think a case could also be made to play a young QB (Viotto?) and let that group grow together.
We recruit one of the best high school classes and some JUCO folks last year. Most of the frosh redshirted. I expect a mostly high school class this year 2024 with a dash of JUCOs and some transfer folks. The big question is filling the LB position and do we add another QB to the mix?
Sparacio and Kline were the best linebackers I've ever seen at Eastern. It was painful watching the linebacker play before them. Those 2 will be missed.
We NEED juco linebackers next year or it could get ugly.
The good news is that Carter Evans will be back and I think he can be a stud at DE to finally get sacks and relieve some pressure.
Regarding QB.....no offense to Austin, but the tape shows he is not the guy. what's worse is the guys behind him who CC played and they were worse. We need Viotto to come home or another disgruntled P5 guy in the worse way.
Immediate portal position needs:
-O-line
-LB
-QB
I agree even if you think Austin will develop his backups are not adequate need to upgrade that area and bring in some better competition for the starting QB job.
we will never know, but man I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the coaches rooms to hear those conversations about who they are targeting in the portal and how
Do portal guys get official visits?
Yes they get visits.

I think we all saw this coming. I’m sure he’s a great young man that can play at FCS level or D2

Wonder what the back story is on this. It's likely that the staff was crystal clear with Austin and told him they would be trying to pull in a transfer QB. Regardless, good luck to the kid.
The bowl game ought to be quite interesting.

HMMMMMM.
This gives me hope for the coaching staff. They have the evaluation ability to recognize the truth about Austin Smith (albeit late), and the honesty to communicate it to him.

Do they have time to install the triple option?

Frank, thanks for breaking the news! Like Nickle, I also wish the kid best of luck. And finally, Steve raises a good point: as much as some pinned the blame of a disappointing season on Austin Smith, this team is basically screwed without him. He could not have been that bad.
As ‘4840 is suggesting in another thread, it may not matter. Obtaining the bowl invitation puts us at an in-state recruiting advantage over Central and Western and gives some extended practice especially for the younglings- Win or Lose.

Aveon Smith, the MAC champ QB from Miami, is in the portal. Crazy.
Most of the MAC will have new QBs next year.

Creighton made it crystal clear without throwing any player or coach under the bud that the passing game needed vast improvement. I’m sure Coach Creighton was honest about bringing in competition. I surely would like Austin to stay as a back up. Wishing him the best of luck.
Are we going to have enough players for the bowl game lol?
Four starters transfer out
Merritt - transfer
Micah Coleman - transfer
Andreas - transfer
Austin - transfer.

When are they leaving after finals, after the bowl games, or after spring semester?
Seems any QB worth his salt is going, pro or to the portal. It sucks.

Then we should go snag a good Div 2 or FCS QB
