RE: New FBS league on the horizon?
I have a feeling this is just posturing by the league due to pressure from the member schools. Tarleton was actively selling the move to D1 as far back as 2008. I know because I went on a tour and they were touting that they would move up "soon". The WAC schools have probably been trying to sell "FBS" to recruits for the past 2 years and need the league to at least look like they're trying to move to FBS because they can only pitch FBS for so long with nothing to show for it.

Not if they are under the "WAC" moniker.

If this happens, there will be 17 FBS schools in Texas.

I think the original plan was for the WAC to move up alone. But it looked like it wasn't as guaranteed of a plan as first thought. So these schools (particularly SHSU) likely decided to go for a sure thing when CUSA reached out rather than wait on the WAC maybe being able to move up.

If this happens, where is C-USA going to promote from?

I guess University of West Florida better start getting ready. 03-snooty

Seems like other leagues could push back. Or just not schedule them. This isn't the right way to become FBS.

Yikes. There needs to be some kind of minimum funding level in place for FBS schools to prevent stuff like this from happening.

Or some structure in place to let the FBS schools vote on pending moveups

It's also a league C-USA can be competitive with. Think of the epic matchups between Kenny Saw and Tarlyton State. No one will care mind you, but epic nonetheless!

With 17 FBS teams and Texas’ 29.53 million population, that would come to an FBS team per 1.7 million people. This league would give Alabama a 7th FBS team. With Alabama’s 5.4 million population we’d have an FBS team per every 720K people.

It just feels like them getting ahead of the split that will come eventually. At some point the top 30-40 teams will form their own league so they can keep all of the money. At that point G5 becomes FCS, basically every division goes down a level.

This answers it. You were right about a guarantee vs. a risk.

if the WAC pulls this off, do NMSU and Sam Houston bail on CUSA to join this new league?

What happened to all the attendance and fundraising requirements that they made us jump through to join the FBS? Some of these schools couldn’t out-fundraise my high school

Texas-Rio Grand
Tarleton State
Abeline Christian
Stephen F Austin
UTSA
Rice
North Texas
SMU
Texas State
UTEP
SHSU

Get UT Arlington on board, and maybe you have that Texas league.

I don't want to lose Texas State. Keep em here.

BTW, North Texas fans would still complain about this.

No. Because this new league is going to be hot garbage for TV deal, as bad as cusa is it's as crazy as this sounds, a little bit more stable.

It's not like this new league is going to cut costs on travel, it still goes all the way from Utah to Kentucky.

Luckily Larry has the next 4 seasons of schedules pretty much fully booked. At least that is one thing we can say about him. After 2027 is when the non-conference schedule could really fall off the rails (openings for G5 away games) especially if/when Traylor leaves UTSA ends up becoming a laughingstock like TXST is currently. If it happened to UCF and O' Leary in 2015 when they went from 12 wins in '13 to 9 wins in 14' to 0 wins in 15' it can happen to anyone.
