Louisiana Tech was gutted as soon as it was clear they were staying in C-USA. But you already know that and I don't know why I'm saying it. I might be an ass and need to do some self-reflection. :(

Makes you wonder if they players know something we don't. Maybe Helton is out the door and the players are all testing the waters. Doesn't mean they are certain to leave. If Helton is gone it just means his replacement (hopefully Kittley) has to recruit guys back to the program.
I had a guy text me that Helton was considering leaving WKU for a P5 offensive coordinator role.
Yea Brohm at UofL. Might be the best for both parties. I think WKU and Helton might be better off splitting for each party.

If this happens I will personally mail 518 $5.18 plus a surprise. If Helton is so bad as some of you say-- WHY would ul want him as their OC?? Answer-- they will not.

Because he manages the portal well. Brohm doesn't need an offensive genius. He needs players.

It appears Austin Reed has done a 180 is now withdrawing his name from the transfer portal and will return to WKU for his senior season.

Yeah, it's absolutely sickening. The 'professionalization' of amateur sports has arrived. I never thought I'd see the day that kids could become free agents through the transfer portal and paid through NIL deals.

He may still play in bowl game, who knows at this point?

I’d make it clear that once you enter the portal you are gone. I think that’s UAB’s stance, although Shropshire was an exception for whatever reason. If you don’t want to be there, that’s fine, but we are moving on. That’s the best stance I think schools at our level can take.
Rice does the same. Once a kid has entered the portal, he's not allowed back. Good luck.

RE: Austin Reed has entered the transfer portal
Adjustments need to be made to the transfer rules. The NCAA needs to get on top of this, because the mid-major teams are losing all of their talent to the P5.
I wouldn't have a problem with one free transfer, as long as it was done before the start of Sophomore year. Any transfer after that, and they should have to sit out a season. The current free-for-all approach to the transfer portal isn't working.

Don't agree with this stance at all. Coaches are allowed to leave kids that they recruited from all over the country high and dry at a moment's notice to take jobs at other schools. Especially with the new age of NIL, you can't really blame a 19-22 year old kid for looking at his options when it comes to academics, athletics, or financial means. There have been rumors swirling around the Hill for weeks that Helton was potentially taking a job elsewhere, most notably interest from Purdue and UAB. It seems he has more or less quashed those rumors and Reed has decided to stick with him. Don't be surprised if more of our 21 portal entrees decide to take a u-turn on their initial decision and return to the program.

So... does Austin Reed play in the bowl game?
I assume he's been missing bowl practices up to this point?

They just passed a law here in TN where high school kids can receive NIL money.

Kids get to closely look at all of their options before they commit. I can understand a situation where a freshman made a mistake in which school to attend. It's understandable. He should be able to transfer once without penalty.
By allowing transfers back, you're only feeding the beast. Besides, players know that coaches can leave on a moment's notice. They should be committed to the school, not the coach.

Yea but that isn't the case, is it? 9 out of 10 kids commit to a place because of the relationship with the coach who recruits them. What would you say to the kids of Colorado who moved across the country to commit to a "school" and now Dion Sanders is coming in and packing half their bags for them and forcing them to the portal? I don't like the current set up of athlete free agency in college sports, but I don't think it's fair that coaches have free reign to move freely and sell kids a bag of goods and the students are supposed to respond with blind love and loyalty of the institution we root for. I do agree with you about the one-time transfer and then having to sit for any thereafter. Also, every situation is different. As I explained in my reply, the consensus around town as to why Reed was leaving in the first place was because he was led to believe his coach was leaving as well. That situation changed and he recommitted to the coach and university that gave him a shot from the D2 ranks.

RE: Austin Reed has entered the transfer portal
The "coaches move freely" is a myth....
they paid a lot of money, some millions of dollars to walk away from the school, as damages. I feel more sorry for the young fans of today because they will never see or experience a team growing up. Or feel the connection to the members that make up a TEAM. But its the world they are living in and us older fans so adjust or find something else you enjoy.
I'm on the verge of "going fishing" but I've said that for a few years now. So most likely come Aug. and Nov. I will still find a reason to be a fan college football and basketball. But my time in those are really changing....football not so much but basketball, I'm watching less and less every year.

Maybe I need to research the topic more, but doesn't the new school hiring the coach pay the buyout money? Surely the coach leaving doesn't pay his own buyout to take another job. Yes, the university receives compensation from another institution for prying their coach away, but the coach himself isn't personally financially liable for leaving, right? Petrino was at WKU for 1 year and immediately took the Louisville job. Western was paid handsomely for that and Petrino was able to coach right away the following year. Thats what I mean by moving freely but perhaps your definition is different.

WKUYG, I am with you. I'm finding it harder and harder to support college athletics, particularly football. The portal, coupled with NIL, is ruining it for me.

I’m with you on that. And also am not a fan of these mega conferences that people keep thinking of scenarios for. I feel that if UVA left the ACC, or if the ACC disbanded in general, I’d probably just stop following them.
