Ron Polk cannot speak to long. That man is a baseball coaching god. If you coach baseball and haven't read his book "The Baseball Playbook", go out and get it asap.

I'm sure it's a great book and he did have an amazing career as a coach but it was clearly a canned speech he does everywhere that went 45 minutes way too long.

Agree after four “this is the last one” … it went too long. He should have ended it on a high note and wrapped it up before he lost me in a poor “roast-like” commentary on Finny.

Listened to the baseball podcast this morning. Well done, guys.
Although limited, good to get an idea of who we might see play this season. Also good to hear about how the D4D money is spent.

Going forward, would love to get an understanding about the gear provided to the team. How long do new uniforms last? Since we have 4, do they get 2 new ones per year? Also the spikes. Do they get just one pair or do they get more. (I say that because they look beat up at the end of the season.) Do they wear the game spikes during practice or do they have a practice set. I imagine gloves and bats are paid for by the players or are some paid by the school?

The other question I have is travel costs for a bus trip on a 3 day weekend series. Let's say Charlotte or Coastal. Curious what the total weekend cost is. And if you can get any info on what we pay in guarantee money for the OOC games that are not part of a return. General numbers would be sufficient to compare traveling vs. home games.

Blake Morgan left off completely from the Sun Belt preseason awards. Wild.

We recently got to talk with CB Wilkins, Billy Swoope and Rick French about the upcoming baseball season. We can’t wait to release these episodes as each brings something a little different. Also of note Coach Finwood’s podcast debut for the 2023 season was today. Check it out if you have a chance.

Im not saying Blake shouldnt be on there but he had some luck last year. But, heck he was a true freshman. I wxpect he will pitch better this year but he numbers (ERA) wont be quite as good.

Having said that, Im really excited to see him pitch this year.

Is just hard to see how a freshman all american is kept off the preseason list but i think some of that has to do with the strength of this conference. If they have us at 7. Our top 7 may be better than some conferences as a whole.

Saw that Jared Young is on the Canada roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. As posted earlier, Vinnie Pasquantino is on the Italy roster.

One week away from season opener.

Just ran some quick numbers:
We have lost 101 of 128 HRs from last year (79%)
We have lost 402 of 618 Hits from last year (65%)

My expectations are not high. This season will be more of a look to see how we set up for next year. We will get a longer look at several guys that we saw only briefly last year (Waters, Tarkenton, Trujillo, Ransom, Dengler) and several newcomers in big roles (O'Neal, Fitz-Gerald). Finwood talked about Fitz-Gerald (1B) as having the biggest MLB potential so there is a chance we might only have him for one year.

Im actually pretty optimistic about this team.

I think Kyle Edwards is gonna dazzle at SS. I don't know that we will hit as well but we added some good hitters....O Neal, Ticer, Fitzgerald. I think with more experience we can see Edwards, Tarkenton, Turjillo, etc hit better. We may need Dengler to stay healthy.

But, I expect our pitching to be way better than last year.

Man. When we start to feel bad about ourselves, at least we have Ark.St to make us feel better (except when they beat us). Last place in football, basketball and baseball. Ouch.

Dengler is a very good player but has suffered injuries the last couple of seasons that have taken him out of the lineup and from getting more recognition. If he is able to stay healthy that will be a big plus to ODU's success this season. I expect him to start at 2B.

Levari (3B) and Wheeler (CF) both return and should be counted on to have good seasons. Trujillo returns and it seems that Coach Finwood is planning on having him start in LF. Edwards returns for his sophomore season and will likely start at SS in place of Tommy Bell. Ransom returns and I'm expecting he will be a spot starter at several positions, and both DH and PH some. If injuries or if one or more of the new guys don't pan out, more will be required of him.

Finwood has indicated that newcomers Fitz-Gerald (1B) and O'Neal © are likely to start. Ticer- another newcomer - played 1B, OF, and DH at Colby CC and usually hit 3rd or 4th in the lineup. He was a big homerun hitter there and I expect him to be in the lineup somewhere for ODU. My guess is either DH or RF. Hopefully he will provide some of the power back that ODU has lost with their departures.

Having lost so much production from last year, a big part of ODU's success this season will hinge on the play of the newcomers - especially Fitz-Gerald, O'Neal, and Ticer among the regulars. From what I have read and heard about them, I'm optimistic they will perform well, but it will be difficult for ODU to achieve the results they have had the last couple of years.

4 more days. For me it used to be football, basketball,baseball but baseball has taken that second spot for me. That's in general, not just ODU. Nothing like it.

The funny thing for me is that I grew up playing baseball from 4 until 21, but I have almost no interest anymore. I probably saw 3 innings of MLB last year.

But, I watch almost every ODU Baseball game.
