Anyway, “Start Wearing Purple” is just…okay. It’s odd and dorky. It doesn’t say “beat down imminent.” It says “This sounds like a song some student made up in 1930 and won a contest and now we’re stuck with it.”
You can’t force these things. Virginia Tech caught lightning in a bottle. The only problem with Sandman is that Tech sucks.
I don’t have anything better to offer. I mean, we have streamers. Those aren’t bad.
You have a death wish brother? Folks on here liken that to kicking puppies.
Start Wearing Purple is cool and works for Basketball Games inside in a smaller setting. It just seems out of place at football games. I think that could be scrapped for football.
Agree times 1,000,000. SWP lost the luster it had for football games and really is just all the more reason for me to skip the pre-game because I'd rather hear Stairway to Heaven on repeat 24 hours a day seven days a week than SWP at a football game anymore.
The only song that hasn't lost it for me over the years is Get it On and the song whose name I have no clue that was usually played between the extra point and kickoff (rarely played anymore but it was a staple in the 90s) that starts with the Sousaphones/Tubas and builds to a crescendo before the kicker thumps the ball deep. I'm still sad the band doesn't do the humping move anymore or do the worm like they used to for Get it On. It was a fun song for college kids to act like college kids now it is just part of a formula.

I know my dislike of marching bands and Start Wearing Purple may not win me any friends, but I graduated when JMU was a basketball school. We had Lefty and the Electric Zoo. You new kids’ customs are foreign and unsettling to me, a simple unfrozen caveman lawyer.
Hey, the MRD's were always big even when football wasn't. I grew up in a big JMU basketball family and wine to the Parade of Champions several times before ever going to a football game! Then when we started going to football games it was still about the MRD's more than it was about the football to plenty of people. So no excuses there, 94! Plus Start Wearing Purple started with basketball!

I suggested this years ago when we first started running out of the Plecker Center through purple smoke. It didn't get much traction, probably due to being from the classic rock age...but that's what makes it classic- it's still recognizable. Plus, most everyone who's ever picked up a guitar probably learned this riff early on.
1) It is a bad ass, ominous and recognizable intro riff that just exudes doom.
2) The riff is long enough for the entire team to make it out of tunnel onto the field
3) We literally are running through Smoke in a stadium that sits next to Water
4) The 1st line of the song refrain is "Smoke on the Water, a Fire in the Sky" ties into scoreboard (or actual) pyrotechnics during the team entrance
5) The band who wrote it is called "Deep Purple"
Anyway, just my 2 cents
Excellent suggestion! You’ve got my vote. It strikes the right balance between all the points you e made. It would also be something the MRDs could play loud and proud!

There were a few bad seasons when we would joke about the top marching band recruits we were getting… “we got a commit from an all-state tuba player, 5’8” too many pounds out of such and such high school”… the band was definitely better than the football team

That song is called Chant

The band was always popular and award-winning, but it doesn't mean I liked them. And that's okay. And I appreciate that many more do like them than don't, and that the kids work really hard and rep JMU well, and that's cool. Just not my bag is all. Plus, saying so always gets a rise around here
Start Wearing Purple did start in the Convo, but not until the glory days of men's basketball were over, circa 2006 or 2007. And they weren't even that glorious. Fun though.

Yep that is what we called it. It’s Chameleon by Herbie Hancock. Great song and as an MRD alum bass player, it was my favorite song to play. Also, with all due respect to current MRDs, SWP is not a football song..I also don’t rush in to see pregame because of that song. In addition, I wish the band would learn some new standtunes. They play the same ones over and over and over. The band we have is extremely talented, but I feel is underutilized. Anyone else notice more stadium music playing in between plays rather than the band playing this past weekend?
MRD leadership doesn’t seem to care about stand tune repertoire. The band is ABSOLUTELY underutilized. Did enjoy them playing Chant once this past weekend.

Well - it's really a mix of songs. That bass line is not from Chameleon. Then the horns come in with just your generic descending Concert Bb Blues Scale. Finally, the trumpets join in with the Chameleon riff.
I am guessing that it was something that just kind of evolved over the years and as someone added started adding something new to it, others picked it up and ran with it.

Build an app just for JMU games. Within the app, there's a voting process for the next song. Have a list of 5-10 to choose from and the highest rated is used.
That would encourage participation and would be fun. This could also be used for intro songs and could change week to week.
Just would need to make sure this app wouldn't distract from the game.
First things first.... fix the damn internet in the stadium. It's nonexistent.
The AUBC was built with the systems to make wifi work. Kind of surprised that by 2022 BFS hasn't been brought up to speed. We need it badly.
I thought cellular carriers brought in mobile units for extra capacity on gamedays, and I didn't look around for them on Saturday, but Verizon was certainly nonfunctional. Bad day for electronic devices (ticket readers, data service, etc)

All providers have different capacity and coverage. If you have Ntelos you had just fine internet connectivity all game long. It is not on JMU to ensure every possible provider has great coverage.

Actually, it kind of is. If they want to make the fan experience as best as possible, then having good cell coverage in this day and age is a pretty basic requirement.

Probably. Definitely not a JMU problem... but get the pitchforks out for the admin regardless!

This has been talked about for YEARS. This isn't like this is a new issue.
I am not getting any pitchforks out, nor am I saying the admin is responsible. Just saying that it IS a problem. Sorry, but I'm not switching to NTelos just so I can have good coverage during a football game.
I know for a fact I'm not the only one and for many it is an issue. I can definitely survive without having internet for a few hours. But if someone needed to contact me and I'm at the game, I'm not getting the message until I leave Bridgeforth.
It doesn't have to be the way it is. It can be better. What's wrong with that?
I teach college students, they cannot seem to survive for a 50 minute lecture without their phone. I would imagine students would rank bad cell service as a reason they leave early, I can almost guarantee it would be an impetus for them to leave.
On the other hand, I love having a break from cell service because it gives me respite from the constant drivel that consumes my phone most days.
