This is a question I've thought about a decent amount too, and I was trying to think of Metallica songs because I think it'd be pretty funny to do our own Metallica as a bit of a jab at VT. I guess some would see it as copying them, I'd see it more as we've taken their state from them and now we're taking Metallica too.
I was really trying to convince myself that Master of Puppets would be good cause that'd really get the students in to it thanks to Stranger Things... But it's kinda just hype from the start instead of building and doesn't really have a clear moment for the team to go. Wherever I May Roam does seem like a great fit for an intro.
For Whom the Bell Tolls…but I think we can come up with something not Metallica. Can’t get past the VT connection.
You can't force a song to make it work. When you find the right one, it works.
Here's the problem: VT has one that really works for them, but most fan bases don't have "a song". We don't NEED a song.
If we find one... great!
Just like cheers... you don't force them to happen... they just happen. Case in point: "We are Madison".
I think we have to start meeting the students halfway. Pretty much every university is searching for ways to engage students, this is not just a JMU problem. At the VT-Miami game a couple weeks ago there was a mass exodus from the student section despite the weather.
Find ways to engage them interactively during the game. UGA lets students answer multiple choice questions about what songs they want to hear throughout the game. I don't know if we can have the students submit TikTok videos from their tailgates/pregame festivities and let people pick the best video in the 2nd half so we can give them some T-shirts or something. But right now, from a student engagement perspective, very little is oriented towards our students. That, and, we have to shorten concession lines down at that end of the stadium. Students are not going to wait 30 minutes in a line for beer when they can go back to the parking lot in 10 minutes and drink as much as they want. I am not saying it's right, in the mid-2000s as a student I was at every game to last whistle, but I am also realistic in realizing that not everyone likes football as much as me.
This is a hard place to be creative, but if we are going to do this, it would be worth a try. Even Start Wearing Purple's use is under question as to its genesis and initial adoption. Was it K-State or JMU...
Enter Sandman is even ripped off. Though Tech has thought of some super creative ways to "adopt it" such as having Metallica on screen to support its use.
We might be good to commission a piece out to one of our successful music alums. At the present time Old Dominion would seem like a good choice. I dont know if there are others.
Something upbeat, JMU themed and unequivocally ours.
Something to keep in mind (which is kinda counter to the Old Dominion idea). The lyrics are very rarely the focus of any intro/run out song. Its always the instrumentation. Thats what makes Enter Sandman special. On the intros, Alan Parsons Project's Sirius is legendary. "And at guard, 6 foot 6 inches, from North Carolina...."
To the point of just falling into songs, and not forcing them... this is a great point. See the Phillies and "Dancing on my Own" LOL

I like the Wagon Wheel song.....but not to get the crowd fired up for the 4th quarter.
And what the heck was up to the homage to West Virginia during the mascot race....that was just ridiculous and served to rally the Marshall Crowd and Team if anything. And don't say I am being silly.....we had a group of Marshall folks by us and it perked and fired those folks up......but I guess that fits with the Tim Miller direction of Dukes Do Better which wreaks of 8 year old youth soccer/baseball/basketball/football.

I don't think we need anything kitschy, just get a good hype song that young people are into (even let them vote on it) and create a better buildup to the team running out of the tunnel. Everything always feel rushed in our pregame IMO.
Agreed good idea.
I also agree the pre-game feels rushed which is easy enough to solve, just start about 10 minutes sooner and it want feel like you are trying to shove 15 pounds into a 10 pound sac.
JMU could definitely improve the stadium entry, but I have learned and just get to the stadium a tad earlier and have not trouble with entry. Folks that continually complain about this need to just have one less beer in the parking lot and will have not issues. But if JMU made the pre-game can't miss stuff folks would get there earlier too organically and help mitigate that issue.

JMU was also using "Take Me Home" for homecoming marketing images, shirts, etc. Which I thought was crazy enough anyway, seems like someone doesn't realize how much Virginians typically hate West Virginia But then to do it against a West Virginia team makes it even weirder.
For the mascot race I wasn't sure if it was a continuation of that or if the point was to give the crowd the chance to boo that song.

I absolutely hated it. From the fact that they actually introduced it as a thing to the song itself.... hated it. I felt like it was being pushed upon us.
But hey, if that's what it takes to get the students going, then so be it.
But let's be honest, it didn't. It was lame.
Just like the chicken dance and YMCA and the hokey pokey. All lame. All have no business being at a football game.

Haha. Takes me back to my days of listening to Don & Mike religiously. They used to run that clip all the time and it always cracked me up.

Something primal like that would be interesting and fairly unique. Not sure anyone is doing it yet. Heilung also comes to mind with some options in the genre. This trailer is from a video game and uses parts of one of their tracks (In Maidjan). Learning the chant might be a bit much, but the crowd could really get going with the drum beat.
Agree that the current pregame is pretty tired at this point and needs freshening. Currently I try to time it to get in my seat right before the players come out.

Just something hype and popular from recent years should do the job before the 4th. Throw on a cleaned up version of Mo Bamba by Sheck Wes for example and just watch the students and players get fired up. I don't pay enough attention to what's popular to think of other examples but I gotta think there are plenty of options.
Enter Sandman is cringeworthy to anyone who isn't a Hokie fan/a game announcer on ESPN. It's a heavy metal song from 1991 that has zero connection to the university and as the years pass and VT gets worse and worse, it gets even more cringey. And yes, I have been to Hokie games and think it's lame in person too. And I'm a millennial.
All of the iconic stadium entrances have the school fight song behind it or not long after it happens, and typically have something unique to the university. See below:
Chief Osceola at FSU, Trojan at USC, running through the T at Tennessee, Howard's Rock at Clemson, Boomer Sooner, Bevo at Texas, the Buffalo at Colorado, the Wrambling Wreck at GT. There are many more.
If we do anything at JMU, we should pick something that will stand the test of time and not get worn out. I wouldn't be too enthused about a generic heavy metal song turned up to 11 and blasted through the speakers.

It was almost like JMU staff were trying to out hillbilly the hillbillies.
