Every P5 can be snobby. We've had run ins with our fair share of them, they all think they are better because they have more money.

Some however, understand that they can use instate games to help in recruiting, reach fans in a different part of the state, and pretend you are helping the state at large in doing so. Others just pretend the G5 school doesn't exist.

App does have the benefit of playing in a state with 4 Power 5 programs and ECU. So it does give us more options. Do any other Sun Belt conference states have more than 2 besides Texas?

The VCU basketball program knows they suck and are overrated and VCU will not play Virginia teams claiming elite status.

The truth, they suck

You may be right, but I have news for you from an out of state perspective….

When I think state of Virginia basketball, I think UVA, VCU, and Richmond. JMU doesn’t even come to mind at all.

VCU’s past success has made them a basketball “brand” to the casual out of state observer.

Is that fair? Is that accurate? I have no idea. But what I do know is that perception is reality.

The perception is fair.

UVa has a solid mbb program and a classy coach...VCU (I was a huge fan during the Final 4 year) will no longer play in-state schools and that is just not acceptable IMO...Richmond is private and can do what Richmond wants to do.

JMU basketball was once solid, a few consecutive bad coaching hires destroyed a once proud program. We just built a $140M arena, a huge step towards improvement. The previous basketball facility was atrocious which is surprising b/c the entire campus around the awful Convocation Center is great.

Now we need a coach to get over a hump...If we have one in M Byington (from Georgia South) remains to be seen. Our OoC home basketball schedule this year sucks donkey balls, I know that...

We've had 30 years of awful presidents (in terms of athletics) to get over. We finally seem to have one that will truly pay attention to athletics. We are now searching for a new AD and this hire will be the key to any future growth we may have. A bad choice here could doom our program.

Gotta love the snotty teams that think they're above the rest of the state, but hey, most of us see that school up north like you guys see LT so...I do like the arena, as I've said I caught a game back in the winter. A lot of us are interested to see if the new AD will *gasp* hire a coach outside "the family"...

Yeah firing Lefty in 97 was a huge mistake, replacing him with a guy who had a 29-51/15-39 record just for the sake of making the alum hire made it an even bigger mistake. Waiting too long to fire Sherm then made it even worse, and he was followed with another bad hire but a more understandable swing and a miss in Dean Keener... Solid resume as an assistant rather than a HC with a terrible record.

I think Brady was a solid hire that could've been similar to what we got with Withers in football. Not the guy long term, but he brought us out of the basement so the next guy wouldn't have such a huge mountain to climb. We were right to move on when he clearly had peaked, but man oh man instead of committing to spending what it takes to get the guy able to take us to the next level we went bargain bin on another alum hire who wasn't ready for the job and set us right back to pre-Brady status. Hopefully Byington is the guy to at least get us back to where Brady did, but ideally above and beyond that. We've been down for way too long.

RE: A home P5 heat gets turned up
The Convo hurt recruiting and probably limited the coaching pool from which to choose.

Now we have a "wow" arena. I think JMU will get back up, we are already getting better players.

Byington had the team bustin' ass on D last year first half of season then we fell off a bit.

My issue with Byington and I am probably wrong is that he seems comfortable with 10 6'0 tall players and a forward.

We need a 6'9 ogre to goon on teams

Not if the 6'9" guy disrupts the rhythm of the rest of the team. Sometimes when you try to balance like that it will backfire on you.
