The Sun Belt is Done Elevating the FCS
The Sun Belt has elevated FCS programs for nearly a decade. It's time to bring in more programs that elevate us.

Western division schools. Western division wants. If the Sun Belt expands ECU needs to be one of them and I'm cool with whoever the west wants. It's entirely up to them.

Right.... like I'd be good with JSU being FBS if their 3 fans weren't so annoying but SHSU has no business.... sent em back CUSA

I’ll bang this drum.

Hold tight until the rest of the dust settles. And then come for ECU and one of Memphis/UAB/LATech

Why the hell would any FBS conference want Jackson State? They don't even know what state they're in.

Also, Neon Deion will bounce for a bigger job before the team ever plays a down in their future league. Though...a league with Jackson State University, Jacksonville State University, and Jacksonville University would be hilariously confusing.

Just curious, what's the deal with SHSU? They've been a very good FCS program, right up there with JMU. I've heard they aren't ready on off the field fronts. What's the deal?

The averaged like 4k fans in 2019 and then like 7k last year as the defending FCS champs. That should paint the picture lol. Also check out their stadium

They haven't been up there with JMU. They've occasionally beat up on a cupcake conference, gotten severely over seeded, and then gotten blown out every year in the playoffs(including 65-7 by JMU) except for the spring season(which should've just been cancelled) when no one could practice normally or play a normal schedule and where top players from top teams transferred so they could play the fall and be ready for the NFL draft. Those things obviously close the gap. Then they got the 1 seed those playoffs and had no visiting locker rooms, visiting teams had to use tents in May in Texas. On top of that they have like two fans and $5 while they play in a stadium that would be pretty sorry for a high school team.

When Hopson left, Favre got involved with our search by pushing Deion hard to be the replacement. Thank goodness our current AD didn't listen. Previous ones probably would have.

The fact that there is you could even compare a high school football stadium in the same area as me and the SHSU football stadium is pathetic. SHSU will be a FBS football program next year. I understand why the P5 conferences want to break away when you see what FBS is backfilling with now.

At some point, lock the door and throw away the key.

I agree the FCS well is dry and we shouldn't add anyone else unless we want NDSU for football-only, but I don't like the implication we've over-used that route. FCS call-ups have elevated this conference.

Totally agree, it all depends on the specific school. The SBC has brought up the right FCS programs and it's been mutually beneficial in every case, it should be with JMU too. It doesn't seem like there are any good options left in our footprint, but maybe before the SBC expands again someone will make a leap similar to what JMU made with Mike Houston. For a conference that fits geographically, NDSU would be a much better addition than some current FBS programs.

Capacity 12,593. They're going to need to bring in a lot of portable aluminum stands before the 2023 season.

I agree with this.

Since the FCS/FBS came to be, there have been a few waves of good and bad additions. That first wave in the mid-to-late 80s wasn't anything to write home about. The early-to-mid 90s saw improvement, but the mid-to-late 90s saw major improvements. Then came most of the 2000s, which were... rough. There was another major wave in the 2010s, with the grouping being a wash, with both good and bad moves. Outside of NDSU, we've passed the point where there are quality FCS programs to pull up now. JMU was the last one. Jacksonville State, SHSU, Tarleton State, EKU, Kennesaw State, Chattanooga, none of them move the needle or need a spot on the train.

Yes... but there is a difference between Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, James Madison, and Coastal Carolina.... and the rest of FCS.

All four of those programs are some of the winningest programs in 1AA/FCS history.... and most already had attendance that averaged 20K+.

Even Old Dominion, before joining CUSA, had been averaging over 20K.

There aren't many programs left with that combination of success AND support. Montana and NDSU are really the only ones left.
