I’d honestly support that if it came with newer amenities that enhanced the game day experience. As much as I would love to be able to sell out 12k, I just don’t see it happening, unfortunately. Create a 8-9k seating arrangement that is loud and intimidating, reduce ticket supply which could drive better profitability.
We’ve essentially done this already by limiting tickets in the upper bowl to get folks down closer to the action.
GO AGGIES!!!
I’m hoping they just flatten the entire upper bowl and turn it into a dining/bar area on one side and luxury suites on the other. You’d still be making money off that area which right now isn’t pulling anything in even if it did get opened up.

How many Aggie games are there every year? 15? What is happening at the PanAm the other 350 days during the year? Gotta be a few concerts that need those seats.

Men's basketball (15 games) and Women's basketball (22 games), Women's volleyball (12 games), concerts, NMSU graduation ceremonies and the occasional high school State basketball tournament.

Seattle's Cam Tyson and Vas Pandza were selected WAC's Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week. Seattle racked up three road wins this week.

At least they mostly fill their gym for games. That's better to me than Sam Houston or Lamar for that matter that always looks empty because so few show up in the bigger arena. Do you have any idea of how small Camden Indoor Arena is compared to other ACC venues.
No, it’s much better to have 602 in a 6,000 seat arena, like they did yesterday against Grand Canyon. I guess the winter break is still going on? A rodeo was in town?

They're certainly the hot team right now. Playing as well as anyone.

Those NMSU games is 13% of the year, assuming no basketball double headers. So would getting rid of 4,000 seats be beneficial to the other 87% of the year?

Only if you can put in luxury boxes that will more than double the potential income from the lost seating. If it were me, I would want enough guaranteed money to cover ten to twenty years of seat revenue if you were selling out.

I guess you can ask Western Kentucky how it has worked out for them? Because they did what you are exactly questioning now.
" E. A. Diddle Arena is a 7,326-seat multi-purpose arena in Bowling Green, Kentucky, United States. The arena, built in 1963, is home to the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers men's basketball team and Lady Toppers basketball and volleyball teams."
" Diddle Arena was built in 1963 and is named after legendary WKU men's coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Edgar "E.A." Diddle. It hosted the Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball tournament in 1976, 1978 and 1980–82 and has hosted the Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament four times. Dedicated on December 7, 1963, Diddle Arena has hosted some of the finest players and teams ever to play in the college ranks. Originally designed to seat 8,500 fans, the seating capacity has fluctuated over the years and by 1970 the arena had been adjusted to hold 13,508."
" In 2002, a $32 million renovation was completed which reduced seating capacity to 7,381. The renovation also included: 16 luxury suites, all-new seating, two video boards, new concession and restroom areas, new playing floor, elevator access to all levels, new sound and lighting systems, two new auxiliary gyms totalling 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2), new training and weight rooms, air-conditioning, and new locker and office space complex facilities."

The athletic department does not own or run the PanAm. Special Events does. I worked concert security when I went to school and we had concerts all the time. I also have tickets to the upcoming Rage Against the Machine concert. It is a sellout and every single seat in the PanAm is needed.
In our master pan, there are drawings for some suites, some other amenities and a curtain that will cut off the upper bowl (I think Climate Pledge has something similar for Seattle U to make the arena more intimate when they play). I think all of these things are possible. I don't mind losing a few seats up top, but I don't think getting rid of the entire upper bowl is the thing to do. That upper bowl is going to get used this weekend for the GCU game. It is another Pack the PanAm game. I suspect we will get 10k+.

I think it depends on which perspective you are coming from. As mentioned, the PanAm is not owned or operated by the Athletic Department. Special Events operates and owns the space, so from their point of view, you would be correct. If looking through the lens of the Athletic Department, I would be all about amenities and game day atmosphere/experience. Both of those perspectives can counter each other at times.
NMSU has been able to pull together some pretty great concerts over the years. I don't live there anymore, so I haven't been in touch with any of that since I left Las Cruces. I have heard a lot of the shows have moved to El Paso since Mother Hubbard retired, but not sure. If they aren't bringing in many good concerts, I think you have to critically look at whether maintaining the venue for concerts is the best path forward.

Yup, the PAC upper bleacher's real estate might be better used (monetarily) for luxury suites.
