That's the point Dawg Quixote was making. GT sets the bar so low for it's athletes so anyone can get in.

As much as I hate them, Allbarn is also an engineering school. I'd dare say that the Aubies engineering school is just as good as Tech's if not better. Many Auburn grads will attest to that fact.
I'll admit I don't know beans about calculus, nor do I wish to know beans about calculus. Pre-calculus algebra killed any desire I had to learn about calculus. :D

That's true. I know some smart people who went to Auburn.

Not hardly. If the bar was as low as you would like to think, then the athletes wouldn't end up making grades high enough to keep them in school, let alone declare a major when the time came. Stephon Marbury is probably the only player in recent memory who never should have been allowed into Tech grade-wise.

Oh, and someone earlier on this thread commented that UGA football hadn't had the problems with non-qualifiers that the basketball program had. Here is a quote from a 2001 article talking about Mark Richt's first recruiting class:

Quote:Richt must recruit at absolutely the same level as Tennessee and Florida if he hope's to live long and prosper in Athens. His first class was rated twelfth in the nation before seven became non-qualifiers. But the bad news for Georgia was that six SEC schools still had higher rated classes. Richt can afford to be more careful this year about the academics of his recruits. And the early indications are that Richt's staff is putting together a great class.
That being said, Georgia was one of the early schools to decide not to ADMIT partial or non-qualifiers and that is a great policy to have. The problems arise when too many recruits don't qualify and then the program has to scramble to find players to fill those holes...

Biased shallow stereotypes.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) I'm swamped at work right now and don't have the opportunity to deal with all you well intentioned but misguided points. I'll deal with you guys tonight.

But I will say this quickly, Georgia is NOT a liberal arts school. Yes you can get a liberal arts degree, or a science degree, or an MBA, or a law degree or become a Vet. But to repeat myself, this is a biased shallow stereotype, it is NOT exclusively a liberal arts school. That is my first point.

I was using the stereotypical term of "liberal arts school" to distinguish it from an engineering school such as Tech, State or MIT. Let me be a little more more PC: multi-divisional university. Definition: university with multiple areas of concentration, and much greater diversity of majors for athletes to "hide" in. Happy now?

I am a graduate & fan of Wake Forest University, a very fine liberal arts university rated in the top 25 national universities in the country by US News & World Reports. I also am a fan of Georgia Tech, due to 24 years of supporting them since I moved to the Atlanta area. I also support the schools that my family members attended & from which they received degrees: Ole Miss, Georgia, Southern Tech & Georgia Tech.

I am also a card-carrying ABCDer...anybody but Carolina & Duke, although the pleasant, rational personality of JDheel has made me a little less anti-Carolina and a little more anti-dook over the past year. 03-wink

Now attempt to proceed with whatever stereotyping you were planning to pull on me... 03-lol

Good answer.

Okay, what I was initially going to say was that I found this quote from you to be a little inflamatory side. Maybe I'm just a little too sensitive these days, maybe I'm not as patient as is typical. I find people being too opportunistic and see too much bandwagon secondguessing from due to the severe problems Georgia is currently having. And it angers me. My patience is exhausted. I probably don't even belong on message boards right now.

I'm sorry if I seemed inflammatory. I was simply being honest about the comparison between majors available to & chosen by athletes at the different types of schools. At Tech, you will see a ton of Management majors. At Wake, Georgia, and even Duke, you will see a long list of Communications & Sociology majors. These majors are deemed to be the easiest majors at the schools. Now for every 10-20 of these, you will find a Dan Dyke (GT aerospace engineering...or did he change to mechanical...either way, very difficult), or a Rusty LaRue or Ricky Peral (math & computer science majors at Wake), and I know that Georgia has players with the brains & desire to major in something more challenging too (I just am not as familiar with your players). Using myself as an example, I was a History major who made Dean's List my final 3 semesters. I seriously doubt that I would have managed that in Tech's Management major.

Just my 2 cents (okay, make that a half-dollar... 03-wink )...

Lucy Wrote:Come on guys...you can't truly compare graduation rates between engineering schools & liberal arts schools. If you look at the majority of engineering schools, their graduation rates are lower than at schools that have a wide variety of non-engineering majors for more of the athletes to select as majors. As a graduate of a liberal arts school, I will freely admit that I couldn't have done nearly as well at Tech or NC State or VA Tech as I did at Wake Forest.

Now my sister is a UGA grad and my brother a Tech grad, so they have had many a discussion on this subject. She stated that at one point UGA had the "drive-up diploma" policy, but with the availability of the HOPE scholarship, admission standards have definitely increased and so have the quality of students at UGA...she actually had to STOP at the registrar's office for them to toss the diploma in her car 03-wink

One thing that you can't deny is that Georgia has been notorious over the years for having both football & basketball recruits fail to meet basic standards for admission to UGA. Tech has not had this problem, so you can't really say that Tech is admitting poorer students. At least their recruits QUALIFY...

Okay, I'm done stirring the pot for now...

PS: Where's that wonderful 2-cents icon? That would have been perfect for this post... :frown:
Lucy, what you have to remember is that each person is an individual endowed with specific gifts that God has given him or her. If you noticed my post about Auburn, you'll see that I know I don't do well in math. God chose not to give me much mathematical insight, and I have to live with that. Just makes me more humble and more dependent on others who do have that ability. :) However, my mom, on the other hand, does well in math, but freely admits she doesn't know her history as well as I know mine. :D I love history, because I find it fascinating about how my ancestors used to live. I also love helping people who have special needs. Not everyone is cut out for that either. We're just all individuals created by God. :)

What I'm trying to say is this:

Tech is a good engineering school. Does this make them better than UGa? Only in engineering. :D UGa has had pretty solid academics, but the problem is double standards for athletes.
