I grew up a ut football and Memphis basketball fan.

After a stint in the Armed Forces I moved to Knoxville to attend school on the GI Bill and stayed with a high school friend who was on a wrestling scholarship.

I worked that summer, 1978, and was enrolled for school in the fall.

There were quite a few parties to attend and were measured by the number of kegs that would be there.

But it became obvious to me that I was the odd person out. I had just spent 4 years paying my own way to live while in the service only then to be surrounded by "kids" living off their parents dollar.

I returned to Memphis and enrolled at Memphis State and never attended ut.

Some of the comments being previously made about state funding just furthered the divide.

And they do hate the city of Memphis due to the diversity.

Not being a native Tennessean, its hard to hate UTK. They just don't rate that much passion. Weak sisters that are a goofy occasionally better football version of Kentucky. Soft with Vandy as their big final. Never rally a rival. Once we beat the it was over. The whole superiority they display to many of y'all is laughable. They are superior to no one in anything

I went to school there for two years. The facilities were awesome. Walking to an on-campus football game was awesome. Having movies and various events all the time was awesome. The pickup bball games with Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King were awesome.

The people from Knoxville sucked. Being from West Tennessee labeled me an outsider, no matter what else happened. So I moved home, joined a fraternity, and forgot the next three years.

I hate Tennessee fans because they create conspiracies for a cancelled basketball game, belittle our players, coaches, and fans, and then show up calling our players/coaches bad people. They’re scum.

Well i got one more reason today

Any of you saying "I don't really hate the vols", or "they're not so bad"...

Oh good grief....silly thread. No one really hates UT, their players or their fans - just their guts. And we don't need no stinkn story to hate UT either. Frankly - and I'm basing this on my 6 weeks of pre-med back in the day, hating UT is a natural mental progression based on pure experience that reasonable, intelligent and entirely decent human beings gather and begin to pick-up as life goes on. Face it - UT,s mascot should be a rancid, smelly, small piece of excrement floating in a crowded cesspool of a third world country. Besides - they have cooties.

My dad went to UTK and worked for years for the UT Extension Service. A lot of my extended family went to UT and growing up, I was a big UT fan. When it was time to go to college, I was all set on UTK. I went there for 2 years and absolutely hated it. I hated that part of the state. I hated the 5 and half hour drive home. And I didn't really care for the culture of the campus. It just struck me as a snobbish, entitled group of people. I wound up transferring back home to then Memphis State and my experience was a million times better. The students at Memphis were down to earth. The professors were always approachable and helpful. And for all the shots UT people take at Memphis' academics, I didn't really notice much of a difference at all in the quality of the education I received at Memphis. I received my BBA from Memphis and am working in HR today.

I don't know that I hate Tennessee but I do love to see them get skull drug by Alabama, Georgia and Florida every year in football and I love seeing them go year after year in basketball without making it to the Final Four. I hope they never make it to a Final Four. Of course, that won't stop them from their superiority complex. I know when I was at school at Knoxville, there was also a sense that UT was upper crust in the sports world and everyone in the country took notice when they actually won. After having lived in Missouri, Nebraska and now Indiana, I can say that people in other parts of the country don't give a rat's a$$ about UT.

It's their arrogant Wal-Mart fan base for me. You know, the ones who base their identity on the school they root for and that actually think that if their school beats your school somehow that makes them superior human beings. A lot of them probably also think professional wrasslin' is real......

I was in Florida for a familiy get together a few years ago. One of the people there, who I did not know, was talking about college football. So, I asked him who was his favorite team.....he said UT. So, being a Texan I responded that we are Univ of Texas fans too, my son in law and his brother both played for the Longhorns. He responded that he was referring to the Univ of Tennessee. All I did was say....Oh. He got very aggravated. It you want to get them pissed, always tell them you are Longhorn fans too.
