I prefer looking at quality over quantity with these rankings. For instance, Miami (fl) is currently ranked 62nd nationally because they only have 8 commits but the average of those commits is 91.65. That's a BIG number and 7 out of 8 recruits are ☆☆☆☆. To me, that's a superb class being impacted by a total rather than talent. I understand too that the more recruits, the harder it is to keep a high number for most schools, but an average over 91 with 8 recruits is impressive.

I'm also a believer in development. So I'm kind of all over the place with recruiting, lol! Give me a class with an average rating of 86.0 and a great coaching staff and you're going to have a really good team.

to me go look at the recruiting ratings and who makes the playoffs in general and who makes the title games. Top recruiting classes lead to those spots almost always.
I completely agree with what you're saying and that's why I said "really good team" rather than really great team. I'll use Wisconsin, Iowa and even Northwestern, to a point, because I'm more familiar with them. What they are doing with developing players is pretty phenomenal if you ask me. CFP level teams? Not really but it's not impossible for one to get there someday.

I don't know that you can have a class of 8 and even have a really good team- a top 25 level one.

there were 17 programs that signed 7+ 4 or 5 star guys besides Miami. All 17 others are the top 17.

I think a far better example to what you are saying is Clemson. They have 1 5 star, 8 4 stars, and 13 overall. Average recruit 92.07. They are only #17.

Clemson is a great example, appreciate you posting that.

Where they rank isn't nearly as important as whether they are filling their needs. If you are a Top 25 program but not really a championship contender, you may not need as many in a given class if you aren't losing a lot of players after three years like Alabama does every year.

This particular year, Clemson may not need as many recruits and they don't tend to over-recruit and discard the ones who don't pan out like some programs do.

On the other hand, it's also possible that losing both their coordinators may have cost them some of their recruiting targets this year. But there's always the transfer portal to pick up the slack, and transfers aren't counted in the recruiting rankings.

RE: Signing Day
I thought everybody already focused on average recruit rankings? That’s the meaningful metric.

The total rankings that the recruiting sites put out give the illusion of volatility because variation in class sizes makes programs rise and fall year-to-year. That generates clicks and subscriptions.

But the average recruit rankings are very stable year-over-year. Much less drama and volatility to sell.

For those of us who watched Archie Manning play at Ole Miss, knowing that his grandson is a highly recruited junior this year is pretty jarring as well.

Amen to that Ken D! I watched Archie, Peyton, and Eli, and I believe the new one is the son of Cooper Manning who couldn't play ball due to health/injury.

I remember Archie playing against Tennessee, LSU, et.al. and of course playing with the 'Aints.
