On the AAC site there was 1st, 2nd and HM. Thus no 3rd team. Hard to be on a team that does not exist.

Now logically HM is like #3 so I guess Pace made that designation.

Hasn't he been splitting snaps with Van Fossen? That had to kill his chances with this. I also can't believe Metz ended up on the first team , he isn't even starting anymore lol. Good for him

He was although I thought he got the bulk of them when he was healthy and he also made a lot of big plays. In any case as Doss pointed out in the post below I erred thinking there was a 3rd team.

Conner.
Barwin.

You can't have a conversation about "Best Defensive Player Ever" without Conner Barwin being in the mix.

RE: AAC Awards
UC fans have forgotten what it is like to have a pass defense without Sauce Gardiner, and they are going to be dismayed next year to witness a normal pass defense like everyone else in college football has.

Sauce is the best we have seen come through UC by a long shot.

Someone can pull the numbers but I think he's given up right around 100 yards total in pass defense for the season. The way he shuts down an entire side of the field is insane. But he somehow combines it with great instincts on when to come off of his guy an make a play (without making mistake and getting beat by doing so).

Yeah...the amount of people who are going to be pulling their hair out about the pass defense next year is going to be incredible, when really, we will still probably be "good" at worst.

I mean we're going to have a lot of talent as that's always been a recruiting priority for us but experience matters too and Arquon is the only returner among our starters. Also our best pass rusher is leaving too so we could go from one of the top pass defenses in the country to average.

I'll probably be the biggest perp. I already complain about Bryant, from time to time. I know better, but I still do it. Not loud enough for people to notice though.

...which makes a victory Saturday and a CFP bid all that much more critical for this talented and experienced defense to make some college football history.

I was always a bit more frustrated with the scheme there than the player...having him play so far off in most situations is just baffling to me.

But yes, we will likely return Bush...but it'll be a brand new crew outside of that. Threats is the real deal, but he'll only be a true Sophomore at safety, I think JQ Hardaway (who just got his 4th star on 247) is going to be a guy who could come in and play as a freshman like Sauce did (but I'm nowhere close to saying it'll be the same result). We've got two highly regarded guys in Sammy Anderson and Justin Harris who could genuinely be solid guys who just didn't have a way into the game...but we've seen the 2's get beat up a bit on the outsides when they've been put in games this year too. I'd imagine we can still end up with a Top 30-ish defense next year, but we could also end up looking like the 2009 defense real quick once they lost all of the wreckers in the 07-08 years.

Lotta candidates for UC's Best Defensive Player Ever depending upon how you look at it. But aside from Sauce, I think I'm going to go with someone nobody's mentioned: Terrill Byrd.

Byrd out of Colerain was a beast. Too short for the pros. Met his Mom and Uncle at a BBQ joint in Birmingham. Good family. I remember asking the uncle about Mister Simpson. His reply was "That boy has problems!" Simpson had tons of talent, Sad.

IMO these two things are related. Anytime UC gets a double digit lead it seems they go to a 3 man rush, prevent style scheme. No disrespect but our LBs were not great in downfield coverage with no pressure on the QB (most aren't) which left our corners and safeties to be eaten up. No defensive back is going to be able to consistently stay with receivers for 4+ seconds. It just doesn't happen. Address the scheme and I am hopefully our players look much better than they do at times this year
