Leaving historic rivalries behind is a great way to stunt a program's progress. It's happened so many times that it's impossible to ignore.

No reason GS can’t be a regular non conference game.

Typically those series don't happen. OOC games for football are scheduled 5-7 years in advance. If you drop a rival, you pretty much must assume that you won't play them again other than an occasional bowl.

AState hasn't played a single regular season football game against any of our former SBC rivals since the last round of realignment.

The leftover Big 12 team will go independent a la BYU before joining the AAC.

We headed back to a world with 10+ indy teams???

I think being in a less then desired conference is better then going alone. The schools left in the Big 12 won’t be getting media rights deals, because who really cares about TxTech or K-State??? Together there is value, separate there just isn’t.

I wonder if spectators will be allowed to watch college football this year. Boy, wouldn't that be neat.

After Texas and Oklahoma are gone a few others might get picked off, maybe even up to four but not everyone. And for those left they will stay under the B12 umbrella as the B12 still has autonomous power until 2025 and the B12 TV Contract until 2026.

For right now I think we will see a 4 P5 conference emerge but I think we will have another round or realignment until we get to 4 16 team conferences. Maybe that takes place in the next 7-10 years.

Would have liked to have better results last year to build on, but this year is another chance to make a good impact on perception. Beating ECU and playing well at Miami would help along with another division championship.

ECU would likely be left in the AAC if any teams are taken, making a great natural rival and travel partner. Throw Marshall in there, and you’ve got a great league even without UC, Memphis or UCF.

It could happen, if the 8 remaining in the Big 12 stick together and grab BYU and a couple of AAC schools (UC, Memphis, UCF). It’s a lot less likely if PAC 12/BIG10 grabs all of the remaining 8 schools.

I don’t see a scenario where AAC has enough horsepower to grab all 8 remaining Big12 schools.

So, my guess is: we either stay in the SBC or we move to the AAC as a result of all this. My personal opinion is App has the best resume of all SBC schools for a move, and this time, geography might play into our hands.

It’s possible the remaining leagues will swap teams for more regional alignment after all the P5/6 moves are made.

I have read that a lot from App St fans of late. I dont undertsand it.

Of the 12 football and MBB playing members 1 is in a metro of less than 500k
5 have less than 20k students and 5 have more than 40k students.
Of the 5 with less than 20k students onlt Wichita State is a public school.
Its a conference of a bunch of public and private national research universities.

And I dnt mean to rag on Appalachian State but we tend to get exuberant with realignment talk and forget that Presidents still are the deciders and they are far more pragmatic and set in their ways than fans. Cultural fit stil matters. And, what if the world doesnt explode to the level the media is salivating over? What if its just a handful of schools across all of FBS that move?
We all need to take a deep breath.

I’ve don’t know who is getting exuberant, or needs to take a breath. Not me. I’m saying, this round of realignment will be more about quality programs and not about markets. I have no idea if the ripple effects make it to the SBC or not. If they do, I’d rather have our resume in football than anyone else’s in the conference.

As for AppState, we are among the nation’s best at what we do, we have no desire to be the 200th ranked national university. We want to be among the best undergraduate institutions in the country and we are. I don’t see that holding us back athletically from any G5 league.

This round is about who can replenish the coffers. How much revenue you generate for the collective good is going to matter.
