Here is another reason why I question sending my daughter to school (GVSU) in Grand Rapids in the fall: https://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/...ional.html

WTF is wrong with these people?

RE: GR
Welcome to the Michigan bible belt, it extends from Holland through the suburbs south of GR. (Zeeland, Hudsonville, Byron Center, etc..) Most of the reformed churches have been at full capacity without masks since the pandemic began.

Don't worry, your daughter will have little contact with the God fearing folk in the burbs..

LOL! Yeah, I'm fairly familiar with the area growing up in Michigan. I have forewarned my daughter multiple times that folks are very conservative in and around GR. She has grown up in Washtenaw county -- probably the most liberal county in the state!

Anyhow, the current UK variant is currently crushing Michigan and I just don't understand their logic.

RE: GR
Yep. GR and especially certain suburbs are VERY conservative. Holland might be the most conservative area in the state.

Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but unfortunately many of them have fallen into the anti-mask, anti-vaccine, anti-science crowd. Better to steer clear of those areas.

RE: GR
Holland is not that crazy conservative anymore. With companies like Herman Miller, Johnson Controls (when it had a major operation here) etc there has been a major influx of different thoughts. Go to Zeeland, Hudsonville, Allendale or Allegan and all bets are off.

You still have some people in Holland who have never left... went to Holland Christian and then to Hope or Calvin who are nuts. But by and large the population has definitely changed.

I have been here 24 years and consider myself to be “right of center” but nothing like what I have seen or heard from some of the whack jobs in Zeeland or Hudsonville. Hudsonville is notorious for racial slurs directed towards the African American or Hispanic kids from West Ottawa during sporting events.

RE: GR
Interesting. I believe that. I worked in GR for a little while and travelled all over west Michigan. The area between GR and Holland (Zeeland, Hudsonville, etc) is definitely what I would consider "Trump country". The scary kind of ultra-conservative.

Broncofan1: She is going into the medical field -- not quite certain exactly what she is going to be majoring in but exploring.

There are a lot of very good people in that area of West Michigan but man do they tend to be Puritanical.

Yeah, slinging racial slurs at minority high school students is "a different perspective" alright.

Are those the kind of people we should be including and welcoming into our society? Bear in mind, it's not the 1950s anymore.

RE: GR
I have lived in GR 30 years, am very familiar w/ the communities mentioned. I consider myself one of these crazies, but I don't know anyone who's said anything racist or discriminatory. I think that part's all in your head, guys. I've certainly heard some bad things at Lawson Ice Arena & Waldo Stadium.

OP, your daughter will be right at home at GVSU. It's like any other 'big' public university. Plus the area isn't what it once was, anyways. GVSU (and the city in general) has attracted many Detroiters/Chicagoans/Ann Arbor folks & they stay in West Michigan. It's already been mentioned in the thread Holland isn't what it used to be. It's sad you see a news article & immediately think 'wow, that community is messed up.'

Finally, I go to a couple churches. One is mask mandatory (RCA, BTW), the other one is mask optional.

The yelling of slurs was documented at the high school games as mentioned here.

Citing Lawson and Waldo here is the most "whataboutism" thing I would expect, in fact, it took longer than I thought for here. Not even sure the relevance, but then maybe the people saying those things hailed from the area being discussed? Sounds plausible.

I have family in the Holland and in Grand Haven. Based on my observations, I'd have to say M.D.s concern is a valid one.

You're saying the yelling of racial slurs at HS games is ok then?
