Yeah, slinging racial slurs at minority high school students is "a different perspective" alright.

Are those the kind of people we should be including and welcoming into our society? Bear in mind, it's not the 1950s anymore.

There's absolutely zero comments or discussion about race or anything else related to that in this article. As much you as you wish there was. On that note I'm done with this convo since the goal is not designed with good intentions.
Bad intentions? Interesting.

Grand Rapids is a great city. As a WMU alum who spent time there as a student and then have gone back with friends many times for baseball games & micro brews, I really love that place. But, if anyone is going to try and pretend like racism/MAGAism doesn't exist on the west side of Michigan, particularly around GR, you're absolutely living in a bubble. But, I guess I have bad intentions if I choose to accept the obvious. Probably why I accepted Donald Trump lost the election too: Bad Intentions. Not my insistence to live in reality.

How is being generous and charitable proof and quite the opposite of being racist?

Never said it was proof, just my personal experience. Calm down.

How is it "quite the opposite" as you said?

I've encountered the opposite of racism in my 15 years in the area. Sorry that bothers you so much.

How so?

What is the "opposite of racism" in your observations and encounters? You described being generous and charitable as "quite the opposite" of racism.

Please explain, that's what I'm asking you.

If that crazy perspective is racist or bigot towards other religions than you are correct, I'm not very inclusive.

Again, Holland is a great town but there is still a small group that have never left (grew up in Holland and "went away" to collage to Hope or Calvin) and have a very myopic view of the world. Thankfully that bigoted perspective is being pushed aside as people from different areas of the globe settle here, thanks to major global companies, or those narrow minded people move out to Zeeland, Jenision, Hudsonville or Allendale to be in their "safe space".

To be fair, many local have changed their perspective as they meet different people and learn that people from different religions or backgrounds aren't all that bad. I haven't heard that I am going to hell because I'm Catholic in many years.04-cheers

I would also put downtown Holland up against any small/mid-size downtown in the country.

I grew up Catholic myself -- so I totally understand. I guess my bottom line is this: wearing a mask during this pandemic is like washing your hands after using the restroom. You simply just do it out of hygiene and to protect others who may have health conditions.

Agree 100%.

They're acting the same way in "Trump country" about the vaccine now as well.

If you want to find racists, you will find racists.

If you don't want to see racism, you won't see racism.

Far too many choose the latter.

RE: GR
I don’t want to get bogged down in this fight...but here I go. I proudly call Holland home, but regularly commute to Kzoo, which was home for close to 20 years.

The 2 communities could not be any more different or similar...it is all what you look for. Kalamazoo will never have the values of Holland, and Kzoo will never have the values of Holland. Neither place is perfect or bad.

The east side versus west side crap is tired! There is a reason Ottawa and Kent Counties are the fastest growing counties in the state. However, I do love the food in Ann Arbor!

We are all PureMichigan!

lol mostly. That and being the "fastest growing country in Michigan" is like being the best team that didn't make the playoffs. I say this from Illinois.

LOL. I’ve lived in ‘the region’ (not exactly Illinois) but I would rather live here than greater Chicagoland.

It is all about personal preference.

Holland Beer, especially Big Lake Brewing is superb. Grand Armory just north is good stuff also.

I didn't say that I preferred one or the other, and I don't live in "greater Chicagoland".

Point is, saying they're the fastest growing counties in a shrinking state is not that big of a deal.
