If they had just taken 3 knees there would have been less than 10 seconds on the clock when the ball was snapped on 4th down. I think he figured if had his QB run around he could burn the whole clock. The crazy thing was that he actually did it again on 2nd down after getting the hold on 1st which risked another penalty.

agree, not a good idea

I actually had turned the game on using Flo and once they did not get the onside kick I turned it off. Thought nothing of it until I checked scores later and saw that SBU won. The crazy thing is that the game should have been tied as an SBU receiver just outright dropped a pass that hit him in the hands on the 2 pt conversion on their last drive. Looking back VU would have been better off if he caught it as they then would have tried to score and at least would had OT most likely. The bigger issue was that VU blew a huge lead at home to put them in that position.

I was off on the remaining time. Someone said it was 21 seconds when SB's drive started.

I suppose they tried to milk extra time by having longer plays and sacrificing yards for seconds? What it ended up doing was pushing them back and giving SB more favoring field position after the punt.

VU drives starts with 1:26 remaining.
1st down - VU gets sacked (intentionally) for 13 yd loss. Holding penalty stops the clock. It's declined and they take the sack yardage and free time out.
2nd down - VU sacked (intentionally) for another 9 yd loss. SB uses their final TO. 1:15 remaining.
3rd down - 2 yd run. Clock milked until 28 seconds. Punt from VU 36 yard line.

SB 1st down with 21 seconds on SB 36 yard line.
1st down - 19 yd pass to VU 45 yd line.
1st down - pass incomplete
2nd down - 40 yd pass to the 5 yard line
1st/2nd down - Spiked ball and FG. Win.

So VU gave them an extra 4 or so seconds of clock, a free timeout, at least 20 yards of better field position for their punt return and made no effort to get a game sealing first down when they had the ball.

But none of this should have mattered since SBU's QB is so terrible. Right?
