RE: Duke Club auction
When I was in high school in the 1700's, they allowed Seniors to keep their home and away jerseys.

players can't have their jerseys that's an archaic NCAA rule

RE: Duke Club auction
Some folks seem to miss the point to, this was a fundraiser to support the Duke Club and feed into funding future athletic scholarships. Kind of hard to be an effective fundraiser if you give them away or just let them be bought for minimum.
I think our student athletes get quite a few perks (swag, shirts, shoes, sweats, tutoring.....) This was a fundraiser not a giveaway.

You could give some away and offer others for auction. The point is they cannot apparently offer them to players and their families at cost, or for free.

RE: Duke Club auction
So here’s the thing: I’m glad to have bid on and won a jersey at the price I did. These were one-off, alternate jerseys, but not cheap. If you ran the exact same construction through the Nike team football custom uniform builder, they would cost more than $250. Other embellishments, like CAA marks, not included. I’m sure BSN Sports offers uniforms to JMU at a discount, but many of us paid below the at-cost value than the school paid.
I’m sure JMU players and their families can have access to their game-worn uniform tops at some point, which is also good. One thing worth considering is who pays - if the uniforms are procured via independent funds (like the Duke Club) they’re easier for us to acquire. If any state funds are involved, then the process gets much trickier, and they would just go into surplus storage forever.
I’m rambling, but the point is that I wouldn’t worry about players getting stiffed on these one-offs. Per standard practice at all schools, I think the families will be taken care of on the genuine article at some point. If they’re not - we should do something about that as fans and donors. I like my purchase, but I’d also like the families of the players to have something meaningful (but I think they will).

As fans and donors we CANNOT do something about that. There are very specific guidelines on what fans and especially donors can and cannot do for athletes. I strongly caution anyone thinking about doing anything for an athlete to check with their coaching staff or the compliance folks at JMU Athletics.

State funds aren't purchasing athletics jerseys or anything in college athletics. That pot comes from student fees, ticket revenue, private funds, etc.

I know nobody likes the gray, especially this set since it was worn through a fat L, but I gotta say I’m impressed with the quality of the particular shirt. The craftsmanship and design is really nice, much nicer than a typical jersey.
